Child porn is nasty as fuck though. Who fantasizes about under or undeveloped girls in the first place? I can understand if you're 14 and that's what you're surrounded by all day, but once you reach adulthood it's just fucking nasty.

That may be true, but it's just like that advertizing board in the U.K.

Non-governmental agencies that censor commercials or songs are equally as bad as governmental agencies that do when they hold the same level of power.

It's very difficult to be an effective advertizer in the U.K. without heeding the influence of the ASA, and similarly, it's very difficult to run a radio station in Canada without having to heed the influence of the CBSC.

So, you can call it governmental or non-governmental, but it's all the same in overall effect.

We have the FCC, you have the CBSC, the U.K. has the ASA, and Australia has the ACMA.

These are agencies that oppress the rights of advertizers, media organizations, and game developers.
That wasnt my point.  I was just pointing out that this decision was made independent of the government when there was all the government bashing going on above.

turq you can't make up your mind. when you post i can tell your uncertain, nervous and have no idea what you are talking about. plus you're a socialist on monday, communist on tuesday, anarchist on wednesday, fascist on thursday and back to being a good old capitalist on friday. i'm sorry to say but that's the reality of it. you're probably a good guy to be friends with but when it comes to discussions like this that's a whole different ball game.
GS already covers the role of senseless ad hominem attacks.  Take a number.

You're on your agitation kick now, eh?  It's getting rather old.

I tried to make a thread about discussing the oppressiveness of censorship boards, and you're trying to make this about me.

Do you have anything to add to the thread's topic?
I just want some cohesion here. You can't say in one thread that you wish America were more homogeneous and then in the next decry the tools that would make it so.
You know what?  I think the Docta was right.  This section is going to shit, but it's mostly because people won't focus on discussions and instead try to focus on insulting posters.

Who's being insulting? It's a valid argument. You waffle more than the Eggo company.

As far as i know this is happening more and more often indeed, not to the point where its getting out of control, but it probably will soon enough if nobody does anything to stop it...CRTC is the only authority that should be able to actually censor shit over there, and i dont really quite understand why other organization can decide what's good and what's wrong.

Does anyone remember this?

I bring it up because of this..

South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission heard that Levin was guilty of "gross human rights abuses" including chemical castration of gay men. But after arriving in Canada in 1995 he managed to suppress public discussion of his past by threatening lawsuits against news organisations that attempted to explore it.
Relates to free speech.

during times of war the gov't suppresses free speech/press more often. when the country is not at war it gives more free speech.

yea Harper is definitely a control freak, at least over news. Last year, Harper showed up at my local college (Niagara College) and my friend in journalism was in charge of getting together questions. Well lets just say, the prime ministers office censored all questions and banned certain topics. From what I've heard from friends doing federal internships with the Conservatives, he keeps a real tight leash on everything.
