Choose the lens system, not the camera.

Being a pedant I'd say if you're a student buy a crappy old film SLR - you can get phenomenal gear for almost nothing, do some black and white classes, use the college darkroom, when you're good at that move on to colour, then DSLR. Maybe you'll make a good photographer of yourself.

Depending on how much the laptop repair costs, you might still be able to pick up a used rebel and 50mm 1.8 for real cheap. You just have to look around

We have absolutely none of those facilities at my uni. It's purely engineering, architecture, maths, science and social-science degrees here! (and sport, but that's not a real degree)

I cba to really mess about with film and processing them and the like, I dont really have the time! But cheers for the tips
