Looking at cards, the price comparison of the two is about $450-$500 for the 7800gtx, and about $300 for the 7900gt.

Call me a n00b (which i am sure someone will), but what is the comparison of performance of the two cards? From my experience, the 7900gt would be better than the 7800gtx, but price wise is far from reflective of that assumption. The clock speeds on the 7900 are also far ahead of the 7800gtx (450core/1200mem on 7800 vs ~500/1300 of the 7900gt)

Assuming all else is equal (256mem, 24pixel pipelines..etc) How do the cards compare to each other performance wise?

Plz educate and karma me :-P

you are a super-noob :p

with that out of the way, I am actually unsure why nvidia has kept their 7800gtx so expensive, as it and the 7900gt perform just about the same in all tests, sometimes being beaten by the 7900gt.

7900gt performs better in some tests and is still a bit cheaper
just google 7800gtx vs 7900gt to find some benchmarks

The 7900GT beats the 256MB 7800GTX in all tests just about, but loses to the 512MB 7800GTX, 7900GT ftw

If you want 512MB of video memory and are willing to pay the price of being quickly rendered obsolete by the G80, go for the 7900GTX. Try searching for prices on the 6800 Ultra. As you'll find out, price isn't necessarily in line with performance, but moreso with availability and component costs.
