so this made me think that this could be the basis of a D/ST thread that isn't total shit.

Points:
#1: "Now thanks to a 3.5m euro ($4.7m; £2.9m) refit funded by local authorities, it has been returned to its original pristine state."
I'm assuming that means tax money, would you consider this a waste of taxes? On one hand, it's cheaper than building a new museum. On another hand, it's a private property, and technically they're using public funds for a private will...

#2: "But by threatening to exercise her right in law to take back the mansion, she forced the local authorities to act. They found the money to renovate, and the house opened at the end of 2010."

"She had no desire to take the possession of the house. Quite the contrary, she wanted Mantin's wishes to be fulfilled."

This just does not make sense to me... Why would threatening to repossess an abandoned house force authorities to turn it into a museum?

What a beautiful place. Personally I am glad they turned it into a museum. I would not consider it a waste of Taxes as it could bring revenue to the area if handled well. It would also give people a window to the past.  Can you imagine what it must of been like to live in a place like that. I wonder what kind of staff it took to maintain it when it was used as a home ? I find it hard to believe it wasn't plundered in all those years. They must have had some type of security. What kept the Art works, tapestries and looms from being damaged ? Was the place maintained enough to preserve the works inside ?

It's France, it's a small town, and it was locked...

Nice house. I likes it, not really in to stuffed birds though.

While it's cool to preserve cultural items like that, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense unless doing so will increase tourism to the town enough to offset the cost of the restoration. But, it's their money and if the majority in that town wanted it done so be it. Humans are always rather irrationally drawn to art and will in some cases pay ludicrous sums just to have something pretty to look at.

I'm not so sure about that... Otherwise they would've donated, and the heir would not have to have taken action in the way she did.

I guess that could apply, but this is also a cultural/historical display, it shows what state-of-the-art was at the turn of the century

When I said irrationally drawn, I didn't mean it as if it were inherently wrong. Art is entirely subjective and thus irrational by nature. Doesn't mean it's worthless by any means. Irrationality just means there is emotion involved.

yeah because irrational simply means without logic, which infers that there is emotion involved.

anyways (like I said in last post) it's not just the artistic value, it's also the cultural/historical
