Big thanks to the USA!!!

Oprahs trip to Australia has screened in the US with an intro about the floods in Australia. As a consequence the Flood relief fund has increased by about $20million in one day.
That will help a lot of  people in Oz.
Good job America.
Anything to help the koalas.
One thing's for sure, no burnt paws this time.

lol. They sure screwed the pooch with this one. I dont see why wealthy people should get less if they have significantly more contents damage than those with less wealth and less damage. And yet people with no insurance are being prioritised? I fail to see how that can be justified in a logical sense.

I think some people could not get insurance in the first place. One restaurant I went to in November right on the water (literally) went completely under. They had bottles of Moet everywhere as you walk in, so they could easily afford insurance, but no matter how hard they tried not one company would insure them, or so I've been led to believe.

Not suggesting those without insurance are all like this, but there are certainly those out there.

Ah righto. That would make sense then. Ive been hearing about insurance companies screwing people over.

Yeah, it's terrible from what I've read and heard. All sorts of clauses. Some people have flood insurance but the companies are turning around and saying it's for flash flooding only, and that because it took longer than 24 hours it's considered a slow flood and therefore aren't covered. Others are finding the flood cover is from rain, and technically because the river rose and they were inundated as a result it's not that "type" of flood.

Disgraceful really.

Its always a simple matter of cost, they just wouldn't have been willing to pay the premiums the company wanted.

Looks like its time to build a giant earthened levee and floodwalls. it is 2011, with all of the earthmoving technology and modern plumbing, flooding should be a thing of the past!

If it was a Tsunami then any idiot with a brain would know that any low lying ditches such as a river or drainage swale is going to backflow and flood anything nearby. Insurance companies are a bunch of crooks.

No, many have claimed they could not get insurance, period. Or so it has been reported in the media. Town planning is partially responsible for this, as they thought they'd never have another '74.

Yes. House near a river, upstream has a LOT of rainfall into a catchment area, the rainwater goes into the dam which the needs to have the outlets going so it doesn't fill up too much and breach. All the rainwater goes down river. At the same time we have a king tide, and this in turn causes a flood.

So really, is it the king tide, the rain or the river that caused this flood? Seems to me it's a bit of everything. I think some insurance companies just want to choose whichever isn't covered by a given policy.

Windspeed next to the eye approaching 300kmh, tidal surges of up to 7m.

Cities that are hundreds of km inland are being put on cyclone alert.

Seriously that thing is huge. Bigger than NSW and NSW from personal experience is a big place. In the same kind of ballpark as some of the American super-hurricanes, Katrina et al.

EDIT: Here is the BOM press release. Normally they're extremely reserved and conservative in their language... not today:

SEVERE TC YASI IS A LARGE AND VERY POWERFUL TROPICAL CYCLONE AND POSES AN
EXTREMELY SERIOUS THREAT TO LIFE AND PROPERTY WITHIN THE WARNING AREA,
ESPECIALLY BETWEEN CAIRNS AND TOWNSVILLE.

THIS IMPACT IS LIKELY TO BE MORE LIFE THREATENING THAN ANY EXPERIENCED DURING
RECENT GENERATIONS.
