20 people are shot, I don't know who the shooter is for sure ... I'd have my sidearm ready.

20 people shot, your holding a gun and other people may not know if your the shooter or not. Point is, the guy stood just as good of chance reigniting the situation as being the hero.

I can't believe he managed to shoot 20 people before somebody jumped him.

It's not like everybody was dozens of meters away from the guy.

Yeah Shifty I'd love to see you and your 90 pound frame take down a guy with an extended magazine who's probably triple your weight.

I could believe someone like Galt would instantly react to a scene like this because he was trained to do so in the military. Just like I could believe any cop would. That is what they are trained to do.

You... I think most people here could military press your entire body. And you try to act like you'd react in anything except sheer terror. Hah. Hah.

I think the threat is significantly different when in the military also.. at least in some part.  Part of military preparation is putting a gun in your hand, whilst being under the impression that something could happen at any time. You are always on guard in wartime situations. However, seeing this when you are home, unarmed, and in a large crowd of mostly stable people is quite a shocker. Certainly military experience would help, especially in dealing with the fear. But these mass murders are successful mostly due to the shock of what is going on. .. EVERYONE is susceptible to that.

I know for a fact I'd probably run for cover. It's natural human reaction for people who aren't trained to react differently. I'm a Freshman in college.. I know I'm probably not going to try to be a hero. I know I'd try to help after the fact because I took a basic CPR course a few years back, but I'd get my ass to cover or protect my family/friends if I could if the shooter had just started firing. Just the reality of it and I'm not afraid to admit it.

But you know, 90 pound Shifty is some mega-marine wannabe so he thinks he could stop him and gets pissed at people for letting him shoot 20 people.

You know, I'm getting tired of the media pointing out how both the left and the right are blaming each other. They're oblivious to the fact that they are the enablers. .. with their sensationalist reporting and their make-a-mountain-out-of-a-mole-hill-cause-people-really-enjoy-drama-and-it-sells-journalism . Why aren't we having that conversation as well?

Military folks are trained to drop at contact, not stand there like Rambo blasting shit. When I first got back I was ducking when I heard a car backfire

You can't tell me you didn't have a ridiculous rush once you were out of immediate danger. Shit, I bought my motorcycle when I got home simply because I became addicted to the rush I'd get on convoy duty. It's the rush you get from being scared. It's natural (and anyone that tells you he wasn't scared in combat is a liar or a psychopath).

A lot of people do that naturally. Look at the archival footage of the University of Texas shooting circa 1960's.

I've heard similar stories from military friends of mine (one who was at Fort Hood when the shooting occurred ). I'd still be confident they (and you) would react if you were there when this shooting occurred. You were trained to deal with enemies firing at you with weapons.

Shifty is not. His love of guns means absolutely nothing except maybe the fact that he'll be a future serial killer one day.

I've never been shot at with real bullets, I can only assume that somebody would jump him when he pulled the gun.

I don't say stuff like "I'm glad he's gone then" in reference to the currently deceased Judge. Pretty ironic that you, the self admitted troll, is telling me to get back to EE. When I'm here, I at least attempt to stay mature.

Yea, To be 100% honest I felt an eerie calm come over me when I noticed that it was a real gun barrel on my head (I thought about what  dieing would do to my family). Probably because it happened so fast, although at the time it did not feel like it happened fast. I could not wait for them to leave. It was weird, once they tore off, I felt my heart rate pickup. .. only after they left.

when my uncle came back from Vietnam, we had Easter dinner at our house. My sister tried to help my mom, and dropped a plate.

i swear my uncle hit the ground before it did. when i asked my dad "what was up with that?" he simply said you'll have to ask your uncle.

Agent Orange did him in before i got the chance.

The flip side to that is that naivete lends a bravery all its own. When Eisenhower was planning the D-Day invasions he purposely put inexperienced troops in the leading waves. Why? Because veterans would've looked up at those cliffs and said 'fuck that'. Novices didn't know any better so they charged ahead and secured the beaches. I've seen what guns can do and I sure as shit wouldn't make a frontal assault on a dude armed with a gun if I was unarmed.
