back then writing was still a pretty educated pursuit, people were well-read and well-learned

i'm always suspicious of novels I see advertised on the Metro
i think austen, content-wise is pretty shit... she just didn't push anything new, other than the feminist-social agenda of her day
but i would never put her on anywhere near the same level as supermarket fiction. her books are canonical and classic for a reason.
