i bought the book Lightrrom 3 by Scott Kelby from there.

i like Kelby's approach. he does take for granted that his readers know photoshop, which i don't.

Jenspm, this will sound like a smartass remark, but i truly mean it - read the manual that came with the camera. Canon does a nice job telling you what the camera will do.

i ignored this advice, and 8 months owning my camera, i found a button to the left of where the lens mounts. turns out it was a depth of field preview, and i use it a lot now . . .

Haha, ok, thanks

I tend to just throw away the manual first thing, I'll try reading it this time.

Good As burnzz said, read. the. manual. You must become completely familiar with your cameras settings/buttons/etc in order to get the most out of it.

The best advice would be to also read up on some basics of exposure (ie. the relationship between shutter speed, aperture and ISO)... and then just go out and take as many photos as you can. There will be a lot of shit ones to start with, but that's how you learn

So for those who haven't been following my flickr, I've been shooting more film...

I love this building. Ever since seeing it in a book on "Skyscrapers", and subsequently coming here on a high school art excursion, I've been fascinated by the building's amazing curves and sleek design. Brilliant Renzo, brilliant.

Peter is in the middle of the frame capturing this shot for his architecture portfolio. I could never imagine shooting for a portfolio, so I've tried to use the scale between Peter and his surroundings as a metaphor for what I perceive as the immensity of the task.

A few moments after taking this, a security guard came out of the building and told us "no photos". I smiled and said "sure" - I already had what I came for.

I've been using http://stopshootingauto.com/ , and it's really given a great (and simple) overview of the basics.

Film.. just cause. I like the look of it, and it's a challenge! Every shot costs me a dollar, so I'm really forced to think about my photos.

any of you been chased off by security while taking photos?

Why a dollar per shot?  Invest in a good negative scanner.  So well worth it.

*good* film here is like 15 bucks a roll.. and same with processing at a photolab. It wouldn't be any cheaper for me to scan the negatives.. the photolab does it as well. xD

I really need to do a bulk buy from B&H or Adorama..

How beginner?

Chris Orwig has some video out there on Lynda.com (and other places) that are pretty helpful for the novice. Also, bookmark http://strobist.blogspot.com/

I know it sucks on toast .. but sometimes

As it happened, TechCrunch was merely running the photo that was supplied by the guest author, Semil Shah, who searched on Flickr without clicking the "Creative Commons only" button. He is not a publisher or a photographer. He is a tech entrepreneur. He immediately (and sincerely) apologized, and I believe it was an honest mistake.

Could I have gone after TechCrunch? Yes, I could have. But even though it was their responsibility, it was really just a series of unfortunate events.
Xbone Stormsurgezz
yeah  he knew what he was doing tho

Not the first offense by TechCrunch.

Arrington has zero interest in the origin or copyright status of an image. He seems to think taking an image down ex post facto is all that is required.

He has done it to me.
