People have fun taking giant cubes and actually building things that look like something out of them, so yes it is sandbox. Also, survival and survival coop allows plenty of adventuring. As long as you don't saturate your tunnels with torches, there's always excitement underground.

Oh yeah, survival sounds decent. Building a fort and shit which gets attacked by monsters at night. It seems most people just build crap in the regular build mode though. Well, if that Minas Tirith from LOTR was built as a fort for survival mode. That is some shit right there. Even if it wasn't, I guess...but then it's kinda pointless.
