following up un prophete (the prophet) by audiard i'm going to watch de battre mon cœur s'est arrêté (the beat that my heart skipped) tonight

i hope it's as good as the first, which was absolutely phenomenal cinema. one of the rare films i've seen this year that i'd give a 9-10 rating.

I just rewatched Ghostbusters  10/10  but I'm biased.  I grew up watching a copy of this movie taped from a 1980's tv broadcast.

I forgot how damned hot Sigourney Weaver used to be.  stunningly beautiful.

the beat that my heart skipped was seriously moving. the premise didn't sound interesting to me at all- well, vaguely. it's kind of like black swan by aronofsky in that it's structured around a form of performance-art that you wouldn't deem interesting, superficially. but the deeper drama is all about life, human personalities, emotions, and all sorts. it's a typical audiard film in that it seems to encompass huge thematic concerns and deeply sentimental points within an otherwise-ordinary genre-flick convention.

i'd give it a 9/10, if un prophete is a 10/10... but both films deserve SERIOUS attention.

gran torino - 3/10

laughably horribly bad. i cannot believe how this film has earned a high-rating, or any critical praise at all. the writing and script is so awfully predictable-- there is no subtlety to the film's plot intentions or themes, at all. the walking dead seems to approach social concerns with more tact and grace. clint eastwood's acting... i'm just not sure whether it's meant to be that utterly BAD, or not. the way his lines are spoken, and the lines themselves are just fucking terrible. i really can't stress this enough. the writing and way the film plodded from one bad stereotype to another actually annoyed me so much in the first 15 minutes that i found the rest of the film actually painful to watch. the only reason i didn't stop watching is because i was hoping it would deliver a good scene, or a rare glimmer of hope/talent... it didn't.

maybe one of the shittest films i have seen

I saw The Fighter this weekend. It was better than what I thought it would be. I was fully expecting a Rocky Style rockem sockem flick. However, the in the ring boxing scenes were few. The primary focus is drug addiction, guilt, and letting go. Definitely one of the better films I saw this year. Christian Bale delivered a great performance. The man has a talent for portraying a defeated-dissolute-person.

While shopping for Christmas gifts yesterday with the gf, we stumbled across a cheap-ass DVD-shelf. I picked up Total Recall (DOUGLAS QUAID!), she picked up a Love Actually/The Holiday-combopack for 5,99. Guess if I got my way? Yeah, no. So we watched "The Holiday".

I give it a 4/10 in its category of chick flicks. Spoiler (highlight to read):
Jack Black, didn't get enough room for his character, his and Winslets kiss was a bit forced and "hey, you're a real pal"-like, and Cameron Diaz's character took all the way to the end of the movie to become a sympathetic and lovable person. Jude Law held the movie together. In its genre however, it doesn't come near E.g. P.S.: I Love You.

Today I'm forcing her to watch Total Recall before I start getting my periods.

did you watch it translated in english, uzique? i was considering getting this film, but it being french, i'm hesitant. russian so called "localizations" are out of the question - they are all abysmal and i'd never touch that shit with a mile-long stick since i can watch stuff in english with subs. so, do you think it would be okay in english?

english subs, yes

my french is far from fluent, especially in these grimy-realistic movies with lots of slang and colloquialism... eng-subs do fine
