My power supply decided to die right before I had a LAN today (yesterday) so I picked up a Corsair HX850. I definitely don't need it now but I plan on building a new rig in January/February
shitty cell pic is shitty.
This thing rocks, pairs so well with my Klipsch speakers.

Aww, I was late to the audio talk

Sweet amp. Always preferred Marantz over Denon, always gotten the feeling that Denon are a bit harsh with the speakers I use (wharfedales, mordaunt short and B&W) but when paired up properly that thing is a beauty.SonderKommando wrote:

Always wanted a pair of Dali Lektors, and now I'm considering them. They're only £450 for the pair.
Although looks like competition has finally caught up with Wharfedale and Mordaunt Short, with Arcadys and Monitor Audio blowing them out of the water for only £75 more.
Too bad they're both hideous speakers. But I'd definitely like to try out the Dynaudio DM/6's
I had considered Marantz, but it was just a little to rich for my blood. Im very pleased with this Denon though. Watched Inception last night and Hans Zimmermans musical score and the movies special effects track were outstanding.Zimmer wrote:

Ordered a pair of Polk Audio Monitor 70s. I wasn't even shopping for speakers but Newegg had these on sale for $163 each with free 3 day shipping. Couldn't pass that up. They're at the top of Polk's cheapest product line, so we'll see how they sound. I've already got a sub so I'm not terribly worried about low frequencies. I'm sure the vinyl "wood" looks like shit, but I hate black, and for $320 I don't really care about their appearance.
four drivers...Reciprocity wrote:

....Inputs: Dual (bi-amp) 5 way binding posts
Crossover: 2.6kHz and 2.6kHz cascade tapered 2nd order
Unless.... one set is for the 'tops' (including tweeter), and the other set is for the 'lows' (driver pair w/o tweeter....)
Rep, when you get them, let us know

I should be getting them this evening. From what I've read, the two botton drivers are low frequency and the upper two drivers are the mids. Bi-amping on these separates the lows and mids from the tweeter.
Yea. That's kinda what I figured, from looking at the pictures.Reciprocity wrote:

P.S. you gonna post some flickr pics of that new amp?

So far I'm liking them. As with all the Polks I've owned, they were a little bright for the first 6-8 hours but they've mellowed out and the sound is definitely getting warmer. I've got them bi-amped to a Sony str-dh710 and it seems to be driving them fairly well, though I doubt my little receiver could handle much more speaker. Switching off my sub, I was surprised at the low frequency performance of these speakers. They don't come close to a 12" 500 watt sub but there's definitely enough bass there for casual music listening or movie watching.Morpheus wrote:

I was relieved that they didn't completely overwhelm my old Polk center channel and actually voice matched pretty well and they may even out with time. Saving Private Ryan and Avatar sound great with my whole system going. I wouldn't say these speakers are a huge leap forward for me, but there is certainly some improvement.
The wood grain vinyl exterior looks like something you'd see on a base model speaker. Not terrible, but not nearly as nice as my old set of RT600i floorstanders, but for $163 per speaker, appearance isn't my main concern. For the price, I'm not sure you could get a better speaker.
Now I'm debating if I should set up a 7.1 system. I've got a speakers, I've got the wire, my receiver can handle it, though I'd lose front bi-amping. I just don't know if I want to take up even more of my living room with speakers. Do you guys think it's worth it? The 7.1 systems I've heard have never really impressed me.
7.1 is utterly pointless unless you're a heavy gamer or watch a lot of movies (but even still, 5.1 does the job for that). The best for music is still 2.1.Reciprocity wrote:

Recently I've been using the headphone out on my Cambridge 650A to power the HD555's. Gotta say that using the 650C or turntable through this seems to beat my DAC/headphone amp combination.. xD Especially trance on vinyl - the clarity and definition blows my mind..Sup wrote:
its an Azur350A from Cambridge audio. Will use it to run headphones from the speaker terminals. Should be interesting to hear the results
However, I have been thinking of picking up a small tube headphone amp Either the Tubemagic A1 or the Carot One...
I'd most likely use it downstairs and connect it either with the CD player, or straight from the phono preamp (an all analogue signal path.. )
Wouldn't mind some HD600's either...
Fixed that for you.mcminty wrote:

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
What speakers are you running through the 650A? Seems like massive overkill for HD555s lol.mcminty wrote:

lol, yeah.. it's only cause my parents wouldn't appreciate my playing of music through speakers at midnightZimmer wrote:

I'm running some Italian designed, Czech made "Xavian Gran Colonna" speakers. /stock photo
On the headphone front, I think I'll try mod the 555->595 mod this afternoon
