Can anyone here convince me that college sports are a worthwhile use of state money? I remember reading some articles a few months back that put the whole college sports system in a pretty grim light so I'm interested in seeing if there is something the articles aren't telling me or something that I'm just not seeing.

Too much money continues to be spent on college athletics by public universities, according to a Knight Commission report released Thursday that calls for greater transparency and better balance between sports and academics.
...
According to the report, athletic spending rose 38 percent since 2005 while spending dedicated to academics over the same period of time was increased only by 20 percent.
...
Only seven FBS schools, including Michigan, annually generated enough revenue to cover expenses dedicated to athletics. The rest dipped into general fund dollars that could be spent on academic endeavors.

In fiscal year 2011, Michigan projects revenues of $105 million and operating expenses of $100.3 million, according to numbers released by the university Thursday.

"The myth of the business model – that football and men’s basketball cover their own expenses and fully support non-revenue sports – is put to rest by an NCAA study finding that 94 [of the then 119 FBS] institutions ran a deficit for the 2007-08 school year, averaging losses of $9.9 million."
The report

So if the point of government funded state universities is to create a better educated work force how can the spending on college sports be justified?

Title IX did this.

But if your sports teams suck, no one wants to go to your college!
So dumb. These guys are students, not pro athletes, and should not be paid as such.

lol there was an article in our paper a couple weeks back saying how student athletes should get paid

I love watching my school's sports and it feels good when they win, but if we did away with them I wouldn't really mind as long as the money went toward improving the academic experience.

Uh the students don't get paid at all. Reggie Bush forfeited his Heisman under pressure since it came out him and other teammates where getting money for playing.

So the students make nothing off of it.

Maybe the few who have been paid in cash have gotten in trouble. But don't tell me that these guys don't get gifts and accommodations.

Something is seriously wrong when universities are putting a few people ahead of thousands or tens of thousands.

It's gotta be true to an extent, otherwise they wouldn't put so much money into them. If your teams are great, it will attract more students and donations than if you're some unheard of shitty school.

I agree, but I think a lot of that revolves around the priorities of people at large. Everyone knows Virginia Tech's a good football school, but how many people can name research and findings made at the school?

I couldn't tell you about any research done from any school, in the US or UK, or even my own school.

I'd like to see more than one study conducted during a recession year. I can tell you that UF makes a profit, and without subsidies.

Australian universities simply don't have sports teams of any note. We don't see the need for them at a competitive level.
