Battlefield 3 Talk Scheduled for GDC
At the upcoming Game Developer Conference (February 28th - March 4th, 2011) DICE will be holding a talk titled "Lighting You Up in BATTLEFIELD 3". These lectures are only open to developers, but usually presentation material is posted to the public after the conference.

Interesting that the actual title of the lecture includes "Battlefield 3", which is not 'officially' announced. If DICE wanted to conceal it, they could have just left it at "Frostbite 2 engine". Wonder if this is a sign that we might see something before GDC.

Lighting You Up in BATTLEFIELD 3 Speaker/s: Kenny Magnusson (EA DICE)
Day / Time / Location: TBD
Description: This session presents a detailed overview of the new lighting system implemented in DICEs Frostbite 2 engine and how it enables us to stretch the boundaries of lighting in BATTLEFIELD 3 with its highly dynamic, varied and destructible environments.

BATTLEFIELD 3 goes beyond the lighting limitations found in our previous battlefield games, while avoiding costly and static prebaked lighting without compromising quality.

We discuss the technical implementation of the art direction in BATTLEFIELD 3, the workflows we created for it as well as how all the individual lighting components fit together: deferred rendering, HDR, dynamic radiosity and particle lighting.
Takeaway: * How we merged the two lighting systems for mirror's edge and battlefield * How does a real time radiosity architecture work for a Video Game * How we manage the new authoring of meshes * The advantages of a real time radiosity * Lighting large environments * The best practice * How we use lights * Why its important to separate elements in the lighting system * why is workflow so important * what we have we learned in this process
Intended Audience: Attendees should understand the fundamentals of lighting systems used in contemporary game development as well as basic principles of rendering technology. Primarily directed at technical artist and rendering programmers, the presentation is accessible enough that anyone attending will gain an insight into the world of lighting.
Eligible Passes: All Access Pass, Main Conference Pass

Kenny Magnusson (EA DICE)
Senior Lighting and VFX Artist
EA DICE
Kenny has worked at Dice for 14 years and been involved with most of their games. He was an art director on Battlefield 2: Modern Combat and after that a technical artist on the Frostbite team. He has been working on lighting systems for games since the Playstation One. Currently, he is working with DICE/EA developing popular titles like BATTLEFIELD and MIRRORS EDGE. He has a long and unique experience creating first person games and now, with the ground-breaking game, Battlefield 3. He is now in charge of the lighting system in Frostbite 2 and also responsible for the new workflow that will speed up production considerably.

Battlefield 3 to take on next Call of Duty in 2011
Kotaku spoke with EA CEO John Riccitiello earlier this week and briefly touched on Battlefield 3. The main point being that EA would like to do better in 2011 in the shooter category. Specifically he noted Bulletstorm, Crysis 2, and most of all Battlefield 3.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

"I think it's interesting that [DICE's] Battlefield Bad Company 2 got the same Metacritic score as [Call of Duty:] Black Ops," he said. He's right. Both games got an 88 at the time of this writing. He's also enthused about DICE's graphics technology, singling out their Frostbite engine and implying that visual punch is key to taking on Call of Duty. "We knew we were building on [the] Unreal [graphics technology] for Medal of Honor which wasn't our foot-forward tact," he said. "We knew that going in. Our next game [Battlefield 3] is being built on the second generation of Frostbite which I think is at least in my opinion is a class act for FPS. I think we're going to lift the game pretty dramatically in the first-person shooter category."

He has a bright view of EA's shooter line-up for next year, which of course will be up against the next big Call of Duty that surely is coming next fall. "I have great expectations to do a lot better in 2011 than in 2010 on the strength of a couple of products like Bulletstorm and Crysis [2], but most importantly for us, Battlefield 3, which I feel incredibly good about." Battlefield (series in general)
   Pros:
- Vehicle suported/focused combat.
- Big maps.
- Objective & Strategy system (squads, commander etc.).
   Cons:
- Clumsy & wierd movement and weapon handling.
- Horrible hitreg system (especially when there is even the slightest lag present).
- Patches often break more than they fix.

COD (pre-MW2)
  Pros:
- Excellent hitreg system.
- Good movement and weapon handling.
  Cons:
- Mainly "deathmatch" style gameplay with a few more objective based modes added.
- Killstreaks (OH GOD MAKE IT STOP!).
- Horrible weapon balance.

1 - Taking the pros from both and putting them together
2 - ???
3- PROFIT (In the form of the best multiplayer shooter ever created)

Sounds like a win.

But there will still be game-killing cons for some.

I actually hate the weapon handling in CoD. All the weapons have 100% accuracy and no deviation added per shot. Every gun is able to produce a steady straight beam of hitscan.

Well, true...

I was referring to the fact that they feel like they have weight without feeling clumsy or sluggish...
e.g. BC2 weapons feel like they are made of plastic, have no weight and shoot hardball pellets

I wonder if any of you realize that it may be kind of hard to mix a large map with excellent hit registry.

I know that.. I was merely saying how great it WOULD be if it was possible to do huge maps and spot-on hitreg

Battlefield & the Video Game Awards
If you don't already know, the Spike TV Video Game Awards are tomorrow at 8pm ET/5PM PT. There's been a lot of speculation about the games that could be announced. Of course the main one we are hoping for is Battlefield 3, and while that mystery trailer did look pretty convincing, my hope is diminishing. Here's what we know:

Global Audience & Exposure

  • The VGAs have a huge audience, and is broadcast globally in 175 countries. Spike TV is in 99.4 million homes. If there is any place for EA to premiere a game this is it. E3 is big, but I don't think even E3 has that much reach.
  • 13 world premieres are planned. The ones confirmed so far are "Batman: Arkham City," "Resistance 3" and "Thor: God of Thunder," as well as the next game from Studio of the Year nominee BioWare, the debut of Guillermo del Torp's video game and a special "Gears of War" announcement. That is 6 of the 13 premieres.
  • Also the EA Store let it slip that Mass Effect 3 is coming, which will probably see an official announcement tomorrow. So now we know 7 of those 13.
  • Resistance 3 developer Insomniac Games is said to be working with EA. Mass Effect 3 developer BioWare is owned by EA. SSX is also an EA game. It's a stretch, but maybe EA want to dominate all the announcements with EA games?
Mystery Trailer is SSX?
  • Kotaku has some pretty convincing points as to why this trailer looks like a new SSX (Snowboard Supercross)
  • EA registered 5 domains all pointing to this. Additional info about an unnamed snowboard game mentioned helicopter drops and rescues, which would explain the helicopter and snowy mountain.
  • The video did have an EA tag (later removed), but SSX is also made by EA.
  • Additionally DICE's David Goldfarb was asked on Twitter:

EA UK Forums member Destro777 noticed the in-game ads for Battlefield 2142 have changed to promote the Video Game Awards. He says until recently those ads used to be advertising Intel processors from 2008.

Additionally, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is up for awards in the Best Shooter and Best Multiplayer category. I don't know of any DICE developers making the trip out (another sign there may not be anything Battlefield in the show). If Bad Company 2 does win I'm guessing someone from EA will go up to accept the award. Not all categories of the show are televised, so it may not even be a problem.

Despite the slim chance I am interested to see what the remaining 6 world premieres will be, and hope that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will beat out Call of Duty Black Ops.

I think I believe it, because it is not Bad Company 2, but obviously shares it's lineage.
Holy crap a health bar. I still don't understand why that wasn't a part of BC2.

Edit: nvm fake

I would have guessed as much.. Since both the weapon and player models are from BC2

Not to mention the map is Arica Harbor from BC2

I've got low expectations for BF3, but hopefully something will go wrong at DICE and the game will actually turn out to be good.
