What exactly are you talking about?

I said exactly what needed to happen: the same thing that happened to the US. Have douchenozzle Assange leak a country's diplomatic secrets and it will be there for us all to see.

Single example? Somewhat dated, but the BSC. Upwards of 3,000 British agents operating in the pre-war United States.

The whole point being that this stuff works best when kept secret.

BSC, that sounds very shady and secret.
"Its first tasks were to promote British interests in the United States, counter Nazi propaganda, and protect the Atlantic convoys from enemy sabotage.

The BSC was registered by the State Department as a foreign entity. It operated out of offices in Rockefeller Center, and was officially known as the British Passport Control Office."

So now you're trying to defend the UK's spy operation in the US pre- and durin WW2?

Their role was to influence US policy regarding UK interests--exactly the same thing US diplomats do, except they don't do it as "agents" but as diplomats. And guess what? UK diplomats do the same thing in every country they are in for UK interests.

They were registered as one thing officially (their cover) and did something else (their real function) for their government. That is not the same thing as what diplomats do. Their primary job is to interact with other countries' diplomats. Their secondary function is to report back anything they observe (what you consider "spying").

And yay for petty word games re "downwards from 3,000"...it means the same fucking thing as "upwards of 3,000".

Sorry, reporting back information from conversations and published information =/= Bugging telephones, intercepting emails, stealing encryption keys, iris patterns etc

You're probably confused since intelligence operatives often use diplomacy as a cover, however diplomacy =/= spying.

You're probably also confused because you're quoting Colin Powell, possibly the most discredited operator the US strategic community has ever produced.

Lol at you if you think diplomats and intelligence agencies around the world depend on checking the CIA Factbook for everything. Yeah sure, everyone is aboveboard. What world do you live in?

The difference is I have first hand experience in dealing with these people. What level of diplomat was dear old Dad? That makes a huge difference...which you would know if you either had a real background or had read a book on the topic.

Start with Sun Tzu.

And here's a shock to your system: if dear old dad ever sent a diplomatic cable, he was involved in HUMINT. That's what the CIA does, btw.

Try again. Context makes all the difference. But you'll learn that once you've read a few more books and attended a few more classes, child.

Which he did, often.

What he didn't do was plant bugs, set up wiretaps, abduct and torture people, intercept emails etc etc, that would be spying and the preserve of the intel community.

You seem thoroughly confused between spying and normal diplomatic activity, I suggest you read up on it.

Otherwise:

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned last year in a leaked classified memo that donors in Saudi Arabia were the "most significant source of funding to Sunni terrorist groups worldwide".

She said it was "an ongoing challenge" to persuade Saudi officials to treat such activity as a strategic priority.

The groups funded include al-Qaeda, the Taliban and Lashkar-e-Taiba, she added.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-11923176

So why did we invade Afghanistan and Iraq?

So why did we invade Afghanistan and Iraq?
Last question first: Afghanistan was because the Taliban were harboring AQ and UBL. Iraq was because intel showed they had WMD and they were in violation of roughly 17 UN resolutions, all of which fell in the "use of force" category. But we all know that. Now I'm going to have to wash my hands after feeding the troll.

As to the other part: We try to accomplish something via diplomacy, and you decry us. We try to accomplish something via other measures, and you decry us. I suppose you would rather the countries of the world just sat around wringing their hands, rather than trying to defend their national interests? Or is it only OK when you agree with those national interests?

HILLARY Clinton has tried to repair strained relations with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon after revelations that US diplomats were told to spy on him.
The US Secretary of State personally expressed regret to Mr Ban yesterday about the embarrassing disclosure by the WikiLeaks website that US diplomats had a significant intelligence-gathering operation at the UN.
...
Revelations that the US has spied on the UN leadership and international missions, including China and Iran, surprised few.

But observers are puzzled at the detail sought by the State Department, and the fact that diplomats were requested to gather such information in addition to intelligence gained from agencies such as the CIA or NSA.

Directives issued by Mrs Clinton in July last year, similar to those of her predecessor, Condoleezza Rice, asked about Mr Ban's management style.

But they also sought passwords and personal encryption keys used by top officials, as well as their credit card numbers, email addresses, phone, fax and pager numbers and their requent-flyer account numbers.

The revelations have prompted questions about whether such activity was legal, considering conventions that stipulate the UN's premises and correspondence "shall be inviolable".

As you and the article say, these are the tasks of the CIA and NSA, not the diplomatic service.

CIA has acknowledged reps at every embassy. As does the intelligence service of every country at their embassies.

So again...what are you all in a lather about? There's certainly not anything in the quotation provided that isn't within the normal bounds of everyday business in diplomatic circles for countries around the world. The only difference being, it's the US and you're Dilbert...

Instructing diplomats to spy =/= Having a CIA guy spy.

What Clinton asked for is totally outside the bounds of normal diplomatic activity or intel gathering and would result in any diplomat caught doing such things being immediately expelled from the country they're in.
