Imploded speaker element

So, I'm pretty sure this happened on the flight over from Norway, and I haven't had the energy to start looking at it before now. Basically, when I unpacked my suitcase one of my speakers had an imploded element - ie, the outside part was 'sucked' inward, and it's lost all the 'bounce' that it normally has.

I've opened it up and cannot see an obvious way to 'push' it out again. Is there any way I can fix it? And if not, how would I go about replacing it (ie finding a new one that fits both with the broken speaker and its partner).

It's a Mission M70, btw.

It's a Mission M70, btw.

Do the speakers still sound fine? It seems to be that the dust cap is inward from that picture, which is okay. You can try using a piece of tape to try to pull it back out, but make sure the tape won't leave any stick residue or it won't tear it.

Nvm, it looks like the actual speaker diaphragm has collapsed too.

If I understand what you're saying, the speaker's diaphragm is sucked in? Can you take the entire driver out? If so, just do so and (very!) lightly pusk on the centre (plastic, I think) part of it. But make sure it's not stuck to anything first.

Else, just take it to an audio shop.

I can push the entire thing upward (so that it pulls on the beige part), but that doesn't really help..

(if anyone has any ideas on how to fix it on my own, however, I'll of course try, then look for a repair shop and then (if needed) get a new one)

umm, I have no idea.

Basically, you know how when you press the element (or diaphragm or whatever) of a speaker, it'll go inward, and then bounce back when you let go?

It is now pressed all the way in, so to speak, and is stuck.

Ach. No, never mind. In order to get that loose you'd have to remove the coil. You could try that, but it's likely something bad will happen.

Edit: looking at the pic again, looks like your spider (the beige bit) is indeed stuck to the magnet. Is that possible?

It looks like it's gotten a pretty bad bump, one way or another. I doubt it's salvageable.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Some speakers are made with a concave centre dome, like my Mordaunt Shorts, the soft convex centre is simply a way of preventing the woofer generating certain harmonics and frequencies which are better left to the tweeter IIRC.

If you can't pull it out, with sticky tape or a vacuum cleaner nozzle (set it on very low or open the bypass hole in the hose), and if it works I'd just push the other one in to match.

That's not his problem. His problem is that the whole cone assembly is pushed (and stuck) in as far as it goes. See the spider (the orange-ish bit) in the second picture? It's supposed to be flat, not tilting inwards.

Oh, sorry, the whole cone assembly isn't stuck, it's only the top 'layer' (I think that's what Dilbert is talking about). I can push the cone up and down and drag the spider with it..

I assume you feel and hear a scratching noise when you move it up and down? If so, you're probably dealing with a dislocated magnet.

Yeh, pretty much. You could disassemble the magnet and re-glue it, but it's a rather tedious process, especially for shielded magnets. It definitely isn't worth it for that speaker.
