Right. I want to point out that this isn't an 'audiophile' thing, I just think vinyls are pretty damn awesome to have/collect and I'd like to start myself.

So I'm looking for an entry-level vinyl/record player/turntable that isn't too pricey.

I don't need built-in speakers, but a pre-amp would be nice. Something that can be upgraded in the future and has some potential would be awesome, but I understand that this isn't easy to get at low prices. Getting a cheap one now and upgrade to a more expensive one later on if I enjoy it isn't out of the question.

As for sound quality - at this stage, as long as it sounds as good as a decent CD-player it should be fine I think. I won't be able to play it super-loud anyway, and, as said, this 'project' is more for the joy of collecting vinyls rather than for the better sound quality (compared to CDs).


I see they start at around £50.. Are these just a waste of money..? Would I have to go to £100-£150 for anything half-decent?

How far up do I have to go (prise-wise) to get something decent, then? Decent as in ~ CD-player quality.

I'd get some used ones, but I'm kinda scared of buying something I know nothing about used off a stranger on eBay.. Do you know of any reputable sellers in the UK that sell them used without the need to fix them up yourself? A bit of a long shot I know, but...

used vinyl equipment isn't really a risky purchase-- nor are (most) used stereo-systems or audio equipment. the parts and build-quality are actually just as good, if not better, in manufacturer's past models. and it's not as if the technology really 'moves on' as it does with PC hardware-- the old analogue stuff easily rivals the digital new-era stuff. the wheels of steel have been pretty much industry-standard vinyl decks (especially for DJ'ing) since like the 1970's. they're still dominating today and still have a huge second-hand/trade market for them. they're just solid and won't fail on you like a brand-new, budget set of deck(s) will. i'd rather buy some 10 year old technics than a brand new low-mid end numark deck. just my preference. brands and equipment that are tried and tested over new-market brats.

You'd need to pay about ten times that to approach CD quality.
