Best AV software out there?

Im going to buy a new AV software and i want the best : )
I dont want norton, ive had problems with them : |
So is Mcafee 2006 good or should i use the free Avast

Avast! is an excellent program and frankly, McAffee has caused just as many problems as Norton in my experience.

I have tried them all.. and if you want the absolute best there is look no further than Kaspersky Labs Anti Virus Personal. I have run it on system that had Norton, Mcafee, AVG on them all up to date on patterns, and Kaspersky AVP finds things on supposedly "clean" systems. I will say though that you really need at least 1 gig of memory for AVP not to piss you off by slowing down your system to a crawl at times. There are settings to increase the speed if you have a less amount of memory, but you lose some of the "Real Time" scanning by doing so. I have 2 Gigs and I have no problems with anything, and I have not been infected by anything for years. Even though it is not a firewall, it tells me when my computer is being port scanned or attacked with exploits. AVP checks for pattern updates every three hours and Kaspersky Labs is always right on top of pattern changes to counter emerging threats.

May not be for everyone some love it some hate it, but if you ABSOLUTELY want to be locked up tight virus wise.. Kaspersky AVP is the way to go.

on some of the older versions, some people had issues especially those with pretty ragged systems to begin with. The newer versions are rock solid, and Kaspersky responds to emails and adds fixes to its software whenever the need comes. I get the feeling that most... not all... but most other AV companies are a hell of a lot more worried about supporting their corporate software.I belive that Kaspersky uses the same basic client/engine for consumer and corporate software, and it lets me know it needs a reboot from time to time when it has updated its engine automatically.

edit.. yeah.. I have heard great things about NOD32 also, have not tried it but word on the block is that is pretty tough.

Kaspersky AV Personal Pro 5.0 is my personal fave. Beats the pants off of Norton or McAfee (both give me severe errors or startup hangs). Never liked AVG personally, I hear AVAST! is slow, though don't quote me.

I third that - though i have norton on my computer (because it was free) i maintain a LOT of computers and AVG is neat, simple, and runs out of the way - just what you want from AV software.

ClamAV is open source, and can be made to work with Snort packet capture/filter. How about stopping viruses before the packets even finish streaming in? pretty cool.

i agree with nod32 and norton, but opensource is olso opensource for hackers/virus builders....

do not ever buy norton! unless you plane on doubling evrything you got in your comp, it will use half! doesent matter how much you got (sort of frustratraded it dident work for me.....)

i fourth it or what ever ya its simple although it updates every time you turn on your pc you can shut it off with one button and ya perfect for gaming it WILL NOT SCAN WHILE GAMMING IF IT IS OFF unlike norton and mcafee i hate the fact that you can't tell it to never ever ever scan but avg you just right clikc on the bar click exit and it will not pop back up
