New question: http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?pi … 4#p3372164

Just gonna use it as a vent server atm, maybe something else later. It's a pretty crap computer.

cpu: 700mhz
ram: 256mb?
hd: 12gb

I'd say something light. Perhaps Puppy Linux.

Well is it easy to install things on it? I still have to figure out how to install and run vent on it.

Dunno, never used it, just know it's good for low-spec machines.

If the copy of windows is "free" for you, then XP since it will be alot easier for you to install, troubleshoot or find guides on Vent server editing...

If the copy of windows must be purchased for this machine alone, then ubuntu...

EDIT: Also, I just noticed that my phone has better specs than that

If you are concerned about how hard it is and have no desire to learn, just install xp. Probably will run just the same for you.

It has xp on it now, atm. Don't like it though. It takes 20mins for the damn thing to boot up. (not kidding)

So guess I'll try puppy linux. Played a tiny bit in ubuntu, so guess I'll be on a steep learning curve.

LOL, I'd install ubuntu-server... And completely ignore a UI.

It'll run smooth... ..enough XD

Put some manner of Linux on it with just a base system installation. Pretty much anything will run on that machine. The Ventrilo server software is incredibly bad, but configuration-wise, it should be the same as Windows. It takes no effort to set up, and you can consult any of about a million guides if you get stuck anywhere in the process.

^^

Also, TS3 is incredibly easy to setup on ubuntu-server

... and yes .. it's headless.

I just put xp on it. Easier and quicker. Don't want a headache.

And yes i prefer ts3, but the damn ppl want vent.

me - I'll host a ts3 server!
them - Sounds great, but can it be vent like we already have?
me - ....teamspeak's easier....
them - Naaaaah we won't use it unless its vent.
me - ._.    .     ..       ...        ....fine.

But thanks for the recomendations.

TS is technically better
Vent is easier and more popular

But you need a tech badge to "/debate" in a tech thread

I hear that Finray has a recurring nightmare where 1 is subtracted from the number of tech team badges he holds.

I'd say TS has always been easier.

..however i did use ts first, and thus became used to it first...

..i've used both server and client ends..

..ts is easier server side than vent, at least for a linux machine...

..I tried mumble also...

..Nothing I've used thus far can beat teamspeak's sound quality to bandwidth ratio..

..Teamspeak's codec has a greater amount of bass, which i find lacks in most other voip apps..

In my opinion, Mumble is superior to both Ventrilo and Teamspeak. The settings available for tweaking latencies are great.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I'll admit i never gave it much time for proper full tinkering.. The selling point for me originally was the ingame overlay.. but i have 2 screens, so meh.

Where the Teamspeak latency is about 1-2 seconds, I've noticed that Mumble comes out closer to 0.5. It's great.

Interesting.

I noticed Skype has also considerably improved in this area too.

Teamspeak 3's latency is so much better than TS2's, i'd say it is closer to 0.5

Teamspeak 2 was around 1-2 seconds though

Just went through the same shit in my clan. Had TS3 on the box (same box that hosted mad world/jalulzabad), but no one used it.

Had to host a damn vent server elsewhere.

This.

TS3 and Vent debate can be ended by using Mumble
