I find it odd that everyone thinks you don't have IRL friends unless you are constantly in facebook talking to others via PC instead of actually being with them IRL.

there's a fucking huge difference between spending 24/7 on social networks (which is poorly social in itself) and just HAVING one

personally i don't know how any university student can not have facebook. it's essential for networking, events, groups, being-in-the-know, etc.

Since when it came to that you NEED to be in Facebook because some others are? When did it become the sole way of 'networking' with others?

I really registered to FB year ago mearly because others are in there, I don't use or need it to be social.

If I didn't have Facebook I'd never know what was going on, nor would I be able to keep in touch with the majority of my friends. University isn't like high school where you see your friends everyday, you need to know where people are going to be to hang out.

Not against facebook or anything, I use it daily, but thats what my phone is used for. Probably 9/10 or more people on my friends list are people I never hang out with, and wouldn't really want to most of the time. If I'm going drinking, snowboarding, or anything, its the phone, not facebook that lets me know where and when. Also does anybody else find that most of those facebook parties always end up being the lame ones with way to many try hards?

Now she is not on the university party scene, being married and a returning student, where as I would guess that most of the others on here are partying a fair amount.

Ok, but I don't want to text 200+ people to find out which ones are going to be where that night. Facebook I can check who is going where, and decide based on that what I want to go. I'll then text people to arrange to meet up. Sure, if I only know 10 people that's manageable, but there's plenty of people I like hanging out with who aren't close friends and that I don't talk to much other than when I'm out.

You have to get in contact with 25 people in order to find someone who will hang out with you? not surprised.
Its funny, one phone call and I can get a good handle on whats going on, and heaven forbid, speak with someone.
Once again you over-react to a simple posting.
Also you have to coordinate a weekly party? Are you a promoter?

Anywho, in the examples you have given, all that I see is that facebook is a useful tool for party-goers (doesnt seem to matter if they are in uni or not.), not a necessary part of gaining an education.
Aside from maybe creating a group to communicate on a group project, how does it really help with getting your education.
