i bet i wire up a new PSU and, after having replaced every single part, the machine fails to even get to BIOS

software problems i can deal with but this hardware troubleshooting is a fucking headache... and an expensive one

And a significant portion of them simply because of RTFM, loose connections, incorrect connections, wrong polarity, or insufficient power or cooling.

yeah, that much is certain

i can't get the 4th screw-pin on my heatsink to go in... the backplate is matched up exactly, but it just won't go in

spent literally 2 hours on it, to the point of probably doing more harm than good

hope the contact between the heatsink and CPU is good enough with the other 3 :x

It won't be... remove the heatsink and try again by going in a X pattern, such as 1, 3, 2, 4 - being clockwise from the pins. Keep trying, it took me a while to figure out how to do it right. It also might require a little more than comfortable force sometimes, but don't overdo it...

so it literally won't work if i just leave it with 3? i've completely seated the mobo in my case now and it's a fucking pain in the ass to remove it all again... the pin came out after i had seated it the first time around

Yeah, alternating pattern.  Three steps.  First round just to align.  Second to stabilize.  Third to secure.

You won't get the proper contact with the heatsink on the CPU, so you're more than likely going to get horrible temperatures. I'd highly recommend removing it and trying again.

a-okay. need proper fluid to clean the CPU die now though... motherfucker

How much paste did you use?  That could have been the tight fit culprit.
Uzique

+2,865|6684
it wouldn't fit because the 4th screw just wouldn't go back through the mobo hole and 'find' the back-plate mounting screw

i used more paste than usual but not an excessive amount... and only because i had to attempt mounting the hs like 3 times

could too much thermal paste really cause that much of an issue, though? jesus christ all this stuff gets on my nerves

really lost patience with it about... 3 weeks ago. probably not the best person to put together a new build

but nobody else around with the know-how, so

An excessive amount of paste (perhaps to the point where it squeezes out once you fit the cooler on) is bad, because it can interfere with heat dissipation, and it can squeeze out onto the motherboard. Just use some rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab or cotton ball to remove the paste. You could try to just reattach it without reapplying paste.

If there's too much, it could seep out the sides and short out your motherboard.

For the most part, no, assuming you applied the correct amount and not plastered the whole surface.  It's probably just an alignment issue.  A little twist, reseat, whatever, so that something is just isn't seated evenly.  Without seeing your mounting setup, can't really say for sure.

Last build, I ended up using the H50's supplied backplate instead of what came with the MB.

mhmm. the stock cooler didn't have a backplate so i'm stuck trying to make this nero-s one work.

i'm too over-cautious with wrestling stuff in when im screwing it together...

i've ordered some thermal paste cleaning compound(s) and will most definitely give it a clean start when i prepare to reseat

before that comes, though, i think i'll wire up the new PSU just to see if the thing boots and powers-on.

temporary on-status shouldn't do too much harm to the proc, surely?

No, it'll hit the thermal cutout point and just go "ouch ya cunt" and switch off.

Any more than a couple seconds could potentially fry the CPU (without a heatsink completely).

You can use rubbing alcohol to remove the thermal paste, no need to purchase a cleaning compound...

i live in a student house, rented, with 3 arts students

at which point are we going to have rubbing alcohol

we dont even have an iron

whoever told me to build a pc "for the satisfaction", instead of just handing over another £100... i hate you

As Camm noted, BIOS should handle that.  But in any case, test won't prove much anyways.

As for rubbing alcohol, well, it should be readily available just about everywhere.  Same day.  Delivery of paste remover?

I must've been thinking of older motherboards then. I'd still be too chickenshit to try it on a new one.
