I'd have to have normal dreams on a more regular basis to even start doing that. I only get a few dreams in a given fortnight.

I don't believe that's absolutely correct. I remember the psychology about why you often forget your dreams shortly after you wake up, but don't recall seeing anything to suggest that it happens every night.
Your brain would be kaput if it didn't process and "clear the cache", so to speak, every night after what happened each day.
