A photo I took of Discovery launching (STS-119)
The spacecraft takes its name from four British ships of exploration named Discovery, primarily HMS Discovery, one of the ships commanded by Captain James Cook during his third and final major voyage, 1776–1779. Others include Henry Hudson's Discovery, which he used in 1610–1611 to search for a Northwest Passage; the HMS Discovery, one of the ships which took Captain George Nares' British Arctic Expedition of 1875–1876 to the North Pole; and RRS Discovery, a Royal Geographical Society research vessel which, under the command of Captain Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton, was the main ship of the 1901–1904 "Discovery Expedition" to Antarctica[4] which is still preserved as a museum.

Discovery was the shuttle that launched the Hubble Space Telescope. The second and third Hubble service missions were also conducted by Discovery. It has also launched the Ulysses probe and three TDRS satellites. Discovery has been chosen twice as the return to flight orbiter, first in 1988 as the return to flight orbiter after the 1986 Challenger disaster, and then for the twin return to flight missions in July 2005 and July 2006 after the 2003 Columbia disaster. Discovery also carried Project Mercury astronaut John Glenn, who was 77 at the time, back into space during STS-95 on October 29, 1998, making him the oldest human being to venture into space.

Had the planned STS-62-A mission from Vandenberg Air Force Base in 1986 for the United States Department of Defense gone ahead, Discovery would have flown it.

5 April 2010 I snapped Discovery STS-131 heading into orbit.

Video of Discovery taking off from Tampa 15 March 2009. I was 130 miles away.

Needless to say I will be watching as the oldest and most active shuttle takes it's final flight.

The launch of space shuttle Discovery is targeted for 24 February 11 16:50:00 EST

Now I so wish I was home - I could make the short drive down to Florida and sit on the beach and watch the flight. Damn. There are more space shuttle missions after this one, correct???

We were supposed to see the launch last year when we were on our way back from our cruise, but it was postponed...but we got to see the shuttle all set up on the launchpad...not as exciting, but cool to see anyways.

We don't want you here.

The launch of the space shuttle Discovery has been delayed another day. The vessel will take off on Wednesday.

Discovery was originally slated to launch from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla. on Monday, but NASA pushed liftoff to Tuesday when it found helium and nitrogen leaks onboard. These repairs are taking longer than NASA expected when they were first announced on Friday.

"Kennedy Space Center technicians worked overnight to repair quick-disconnect fittings in the system used to pressurize space shuttle Discovery's right Orbital Maneuvering System rocket engine," NASA said in a statement. "They made good progress but are slightly behind the timeline that was prepared yesterday."

I was going to drive to the cape to watch.. And due to the delays I can't now. Nothing beats being at the cape to watch. The trees and everything around you rumble as the shuttle fires down from above you. You can feel it in your bones. I saw a night launch there last year and it was surreal. Night to day in an instant.

Before I was like, who cares, they're gonna be replaced by the super-cool Ares rockets (especially the Ares V).

Now they've been scrapped...it's like ummm...there's nothing to replace them, you suck

i think it's sad that we're financially culling off grand human endeavors so we can carry on slinging rocks and being pissy about resources and global capitalism on earth. in the grand scheme of things it's so much nobler and so much more worthy to try and progress ourselves as a world-wide civilization... but instead we're more concerned with drawing imaginary border lines in the middle-east and about chasing increasing personal/national profits, so we can all drive the latest BMW and own the latest and greatest home entertainment technology.

if we committed our human efforts to something other than material greed, we'd be getting somewhere.

well that's my high-minded artistic faggotry out the way for today

Right now it cost us about 10k a lb in rockedt fuel to send stuff into space. Once we get that number down I think we will see the real golden age of space exploration. I think this only happens once the private side of the space industry steps up. The irony here is that there is a lot of money to be made in space.

i really don't see the private space industry as being the missing link to rapid space exploration/colonization.  The capital needed for missions is just too large right now without enough payout to make it financially feasible.  In my opinion private companies will be of more influence once we make that initial leap in technology/exploration, but I think that leap will be publicly funded.

The potential payout is tremendous. But yea, the initial investment is probably more than what most companies are willing to invest right now. Companies like space x are leading the way.
