i just have apprehensions of putting a pc together after feeling utterly incompetent at troubleshooting my last broken pc
admittedly something minute has broken on the motherboard and im not a hardware junkie, nor do i have any desire to solder shit
but, still. just rather do without the building part. but oh well.

they are called "mid range" because there are cards that are even better. Current mid range cards can play everything on high just like high end cards. The question is how smooth will the gameplay be (framerate).Uzique wrote:
it's all fucking stupid now, though, with graphics cards
the 6870 and 460-470 are termed 'mid-range' cards... but they still play all new DX11 games on max settings, max AA/AF
there was a time when 'mid range' card meant 'will satisfy recommended settings on a game'
now it seems as though the 480's and whatnot are just pointless waste... by the time games reach that standard, there will be a new generation of affordable 'mid-range' cards to deal with them just fine. does that make sense?
60fps+ on max res max AA sounds good to me

60 fps for a game that has no explosions or other effects is fine. But when there' s an explosion and your framerate goes to down to 10 you will be forced to reduce your settings or you will watch the explosion that is supposed to last 3 seconds much longer than that. You know what I mean? 60 fps on solitaire is fine, 60fps on BC2 not so much.Uzique wrote:

the mid-range cards get 60fps average, minimum like 15fps on max-res, 16x/4x etc.

I played bf2 at a max of 15fps on my first comp for a few years..Sup wrote:

sometimes for such an intelligent tech-geek, it's surprising how you can't read benchmark-site graphs
average 60, 15 lowest recorded. does that make sense to you? jesus h. fucking christ.
you know, sometimes, on 2x8800GTX's... crysis would slow down and nearly freeze for me. < 10 fps.
did i throw out my entire computer in disgust because of those 1-2 second 'slow downs'?
would you?

I'm just having a conversation. I'm not saying you have to buy the best, hell I still have my 8800GT in for 3 years now and it performs decently. I'm just saying with a "high end" card your FPS won't drop as low as with a "mid end" card, that's all.
mt that's cool. I'm grateful I never had to play BF2 at 15FPS.

i literally cannot think of a game to be released in the last 2 years that makes me give a shit about framerate
bad company 2 came close... but it's still fucking awful
team fortress 2 ran fine on my 1x 8800GTX and q6600
really not fussed

alright... FUCK SAKE
i just went and picked up my old computer (RIP) from the store. i was told the motherboard had died.
with that knowledge i was simply planning to use the corsair 850w PSU from it on my new build.
BUT now they tell me that the power-supply is totally broke, as well as the mobo
SO i need a new PSU for my above spec. i5 760, 4Gb, ATI 6870 blah blah.
please recommend a reliable one with enough power. gonna buy immediately. problem after problem with this shit!

i know, right. this has been a month-long headache. fuck computers!
p.s. i prefer corsair for my psu's, just from experience

do i need 850w for 1x 6870 and an i5? i had 850w before with 2 8800GTX's in SLI...

Nope 500W would do, thought you wanted another 800 one for some reason. 600W would leave you room to add, if its a good one.Uzique wrote:

There is no harm, and not much cost in overspecing.

Fuck Israel
really not fucking impressed with this Akasa Nero-S heatsink
the fucking thing 'holds' the fan on by threading 4 rubber bits through fan-casing
it just keeps falling off... no screws or anything, just this FUCKING annoying rubber-thread technique

my Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme had some really annoying clips to attach the fan, they seem to do the job but i would have thought they could have designed something better
