cheap generic brand psus are a bad move. they're less efficient, and use worse components. They're alright for a while, but never last anywhere near as long as a branded model.

i need it to last until xmas-january time, anyway... maybe then in 2011 i'll feel better about buying a brand new shiny PC

it'll last that long, just not as efficiently as a good PSU.

by efficiency do you just mean energy costs? i don't really give a shit about that

as long as it's not gonna blinker and be difficult with OC'd components, and can perform well under load

i thought there would be a bigger difference/problem that just your electricity bills... phew

Well, the extra energy consumed doesn't just disappear--it becomes heat.  That could cause a problem or two, since you say you OC components...but I don't have a whole lot of experience with that.

A decent PSU isn't too expensive. iirc you have a dual core and 8800GTX SLi? You'd maybe need a 600W for that.. Remove one of your cards and a 500W one would do you. You can get a decent 500W one for about £40.

Cheap PSU + OC = bad combination.  If anything, OC needs stable, moderated, filtered power.  OC implies pushing voltage limits.  A cheap PSU could spike/brown out at some point and fry your other components.  Do not go for that cheap 850 PSU.

If you must play with last gen games, put that money toward a bare bones system with a reasonably powerful cpu.  Move over your existing components into it.  Get a good power supply.  Find a local friend with pc build skills.

Taking a pc to a shop is never really a good idea if you have no tech knowledge.  I can talk about horror stories from friends who didn't know better.  All of them ended up spending more money than buying a new system (which would have been more powerful as well).  Replace the MB, GPU, power supply, OS, etc.  A continuous nightmare.

i had an 850w from 2007, a corsair i think... they replaced it with an 850w (as you'd expect) but it's just a non-brand. think it cost around £90. not sure if that was their price to them though, as wholesale->retail... not sure what it would cost straight to consumer. either way, not a brand and not expensive. heat isn't too much of a problem because i have tons of cooling fans and a tuniq tower, which is bigger than the eiffel tower. plus i don't OC _that_ heavily... just standard q6600 being OC'd within safe limits, and 1/2 8800GTX's with slightly racier frequencies.

and yeah i got that impression too. i built the computer myself back in 2007 but just couldn't be arsed with the ballache again.

what i didn't expect from a 'pc repair shop' was for their diagnostic method to basically be:

- replace PSU first
- replace mobo
- replace parts

in that order... it's just fleecing me of money. especially considering they then charge £120 for the service. so yeah, maybe a bit of an idiotic move.

Bit late but a corsair 850W is about £95-£100, Definitely worth investing in a decent PSU rather than a non branded one.
I'd type my pc specs out all fancy again but teh mods would remove it. Again.

oh

O K A Y

4 pages and 4 weeks later im told they don't want to fix it because of cost... the PSU was fine after (i had a corsair 850w)

something on the motherboard has blown... a tiny part... they don't want to go through the effort/cost of repairing it, or buying a new mobo

SO

i had a q6600, tuniq tower, 4Gb DDR2, 1/2 8800GTX, Creative X-FI Gamer card... not sure what the motherboard was. pretty sure it was an ASUS of some sort.

RECOMMEND me a new bundle < £400. OR a replacement motherboard for the above parts.

the caveat of the new bundle is that im going to want a new video-card, too. so it's gonna quickly become a £600-750 'fix'.

throw some ideas at me, anyway. p.s. i really dont really want to have to build a PC again, but oh well.

is that gonna fit an x-fi, 1/2 graphics cards and a q6600?

and im not sure i want to throw £90 on a DDR2 board... considering this may be my forced moment to upgrade to ddr3

Yeah there's plenty of room for both graphics cards and a sound card.

It'd cost a lot more if you wanted to upgrade to a ddr3 board, you'd need a much more expensive mobo, new cpu, and memory, for a negligible difference. Especially since you think there's no decent games worth it just now.

That board only supports Crossfire (Two ATI cards) and is basically the only 775 DDR2 board to go for, nowadays. So if you don't care for your SLI, go ahead.

Then go for that motherboard and run everywhere you want with one card.

You can still use two for if you have more than one monitor, they just won't work in sync.

fuck it just for the sake of wasting money

some one spec me a new PC

i dont have a defined budget but i want it to be able to play all the current games on decent settings

would like a new hard-drive as well, though don't want an SSD. don't need sound-card or peripherals. case optional.

why is it a must? i always keep around 500-750Gb of media on my computer and would rather have 2 drives that can keep a safe number of back-ups... than to spend £200 on a hard-drive that starts games faster. i just dont care about that sort of price:performance ratio. really i'd be looking to spend not a lot more than £500-600 on a computer and an SSD is like a third of that budget.
