Engineers at Google have tested a self-driving car on the streets of California, the company has announced.

The cars use video cameras mounted on the roof, radar sensors and a laser range finder to "see" other traffic, software engineer Sebastian Thrun said.
The future is closer than you think. With developments like this on street level, would it really be possible to make roads safer for everyone?

Not really.
Cars will always be dangerous.
As it is now, people can drive like, well, people... for good or bad.
Computers can take away the 'idiot' factor, but I wouldn't want windows 95 to drive my car... or an apple vehicle to take me where it thinks I should go...  ok not great examples.
Everytime you add another step in the chain of.... whatever you're doing, it adds something else to fail. With something like this, I'm not sure it's a good thing to add more components to fail... need I say the Toyota Recall?

Cars need to be simpler, not packed to the brim with technology. The more advanced tech you have in there, the better chance you have at a system failing.

Automation has its place, but until AI is invented that is smarter and more infallible than humans, I'll be content driving myself.

Fuck the AI.
Design me a 'dumb' system that you will 100% guarantee will not fail

no, you missed it entirely.
I'm implying that the more you add to a system, the more you add the potential for something to fuck up.

Us humans driving are bad enough as it it...

edit:
What I'm saying is that you can't just slap a servo on there and call it good. You'd need failsafes. And probably, a back-up for the failsafe. And then, you'll want to have driver control at some point....

I know what you meant mate...

I'm just saying...

EDIT:
And if I were to get in an accident, I'd rather have it happen due to my own cockup than to some mechanical failure I didn't have anything to do with...

I'd prefer it didn't happen at all tho'

But afaik Most serious car accidents happen because somebody was doing something they weren't supposed to be doing...
