I see what you're saying, my only qualm is with the irony of those that treat it as an unquestionable gospel. I've said it before, there is nothing more annoying than someone who chimes in with "but the constitution says" in for example, a firearms debate. That's not a retort or a valid point. I was going to ask you something but you've already answered, correctly in my opinion.JohnG@lt wrote:

I'm off to swear an oath to a turkey sandwich.
Difference here is that our Constitution, unlike the idea of a monarchy, is brilliantly founded on logic and reason rather than religion. It's the only thing holding back the crazies on either side from taking control. It's also a thorn in the side of statists like Turquoise. It's beautiful. If the Constitution sucked I'd be the first one to turn my back on it but it really is the only thing guaranteeing personal freedom in a country full of would be tyrants.
I am too. I don't treat the constitution like it's the bible or anything. I just think it's a very solid foundation worth defending.jord wrote:

I'm not a stauch anti constitutionalist, it's just a means to liberty. I'm just anti closed mindedness.
With no abortion and long life expectancy you're going to have a population spike, and that's a lot more illogical, uneducated voters to increase the amount of time it takes to elect a competent leadership. Enjoy the next 50 years...Trotskygrad wrote:

We need a population spike. We needed one to happen about ten years ago. It didn't happen and now we're about to have more retired people living off of government welfare than we'll have people in the workforce. It's become an upside down pyramid and there will be hell to pay.jord wrote:

Immigrants more or less solve the pyramid issue, but in addition to that, reducing spending on SS per person would be helpful. I know that's easier said than done, but economic problems in Europe have forced several austerity measures to be taken, including a reduction in certain entitlements.Trotskygrad wrote:

That's a short term solution, you can't keep having a population boom to support an increase in retired citizens. That's just a different issue though, there are pros and cons to everything. The generalization I dislike to make is more people = shittier elected leadership.JohnG@lt wrote:

Abortion is an interesting topic here. It seems the majority here are pro choice, yet it's very close in America as a whole. A quick search shows it to be less than 2%, with pro life winning.Trotskygrad wrote:

seems too moderate, looks like he's just aiming to gain the biggest voterbase, I'm guessing he's not going to adhere to these positions once he's elected. and yeah, I'm pro-choice
Most information I've found shows that pro-choicers are still in the majority here. If pro-lifers were in the majority, Roe vs. Wade would probably be overturned by now.jord wrote:

Though its a debate that nobody ever makes concessions or compromises on. It goes nowhere, especially if roc18 is involved.
Hardly. Of all our government branches, the Supreme Court is least influenced by what is popular.Turquoise wrote:

Well, abortion is also one of those rare topics where America is more liberal than certain other highly developed countries -- like Ireland, Portugal, Malta, and Poland. Generally speaking, Catholic-majority countries are more conservative about abortion, although our own rising Catholic population (mostly coming from Mexico) is probably influencing our society's overall stance on abortion.JohnG@lt wrote:

I have a feeling that we'll lessen the influence of the first 2 institutions over time. Homeland Security looks like it will stay, but the TSA has already gotten a lot of complaints, and the INS is mostly neutered anyway.Cybargs wrote:

The most likely possibility is that we'll open up the visa process and possibly grant some amnesty to a certain amount of illegals.
I could also see the citizenship process being simplified and reduced in cost.
a lot of chinese/taiwanese immigrants back our halfway through the process and go back...Cybargs wrote:
