Hey guys,

I'm looking to pick up one of the fancy-pants surround-sound headsets that are out there. Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance for the help.

EDIT: I'm currently looking at the Logitech G35 and the Razer Megalodon. I should specify, I also have a set of speakers that are plugged into my sound card so I need something that either will work via an optical out or that will connect via USB.

That's all they are. It's a gimmick, and you're paying out the ass for it. Get a good pair of Stereo headphones, like HD 555s or similar.

E: and this

Get the Sony DRGA500s
http://sonystyle.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/s … ifications
5.1 works good for gaming, but apparently if your an audiophile your wont find a good set. The DRGA500 is a new set though and apparently a good one at that.

5.1 is sufficient for headphones, and there's more to choose from. Consider a pair with a mic. Barring that, get a pair with enough clearance for you to throw a really small mic-only piece around your skull above the ears.

Nic's suggestion actually looks like it won't kill your ear cartilage. Comfort first.

Eek, $250!

Thanks guys for the suggestions but after Finray's post, as well as realizing that surround headphones require extra processing and possibly fiddling with sound settings to make them work in addition to my speakers, I decided to just get a nice pair of stereo gaming headphones.

After much research and reading I ended up going with the SteelSeries Siberia v2. For the life of me everywhere I looked the white ones were sold out. The one place I could find them was the E-Sports Entertainment pro shop (http://eseamarket.com/index.php?s=prosh … amp;id=246) which had them at an OK price.

Good choice. I've heard only good thing's about the Siberia's, but I haven't used them myself.

The 5.1s really would have been a waste of money. A surround sound system only works well when you've got lots of space between you and the satellites, with those satellites placed carefully considering the layout of the room. Surround sound headsets are just cooler sounding toys.

I'm using these: http://www.amazon.com/beyerdynamic-DT-7 … B000F2BLTC
beyerdynamic DT770. Not the latest model, nor the cheapest. But with all the hours I put into dicking around on the electric piano and playing games without the benefit of speakers, these things paid for themselves nicely. Beyond that, they're light (at about 9oz) and very comfortable.

Yes you pay out the ass for it but its not a gimmick. The 7.1 sound I get from my headphones is far more immersive/effective/whatever than my old stereo ones were.

I would never say its required or that it changes how you play but it is definitely much nicer and it feels like you are there a lot more.

I got the same ones, it was a toss up between the siberias and the drga500s. There is a store here I could get them for 143 CAD, so it was tempting.

I found the 5.1s I used to have to work quite well for gaming, to bad the mic broke and Trittons customer service sucks balls.

My imagination sort of fills in the blanks for positioning on stereo headphones, especially of the source is moving.

I wish someone would take something like the DT880 ~600ohm set, convert it to 7.1 and add a high quality microphone on an adjustable-length stem that you can swap from the left ear to the right. Bass and treble settings on left ear, mic volume/mute on mic stem, volume on right ear. 12 oz weight at most with easily replaceable wire and circumaural/band padding. Noise cancellation toggle somewhere, and balance preset software interface.

Get this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Plantronics-PC- … B000G8NO1I as you can plug in both Headset & speakers then switch between the two. I have one & it saves hassle all round. As for headphones get what ever you like tbh they are very subjective things, go try some out.
