In Oregon's 4th Congressional district, there is a very interesting race taking place. For the Democrats is the incumbent Peter DeFazio and for the Republicans is Art Robinson.  Below is a clip of a strange interview between Robinson and Maddow.  While Robinson makes several good points about his opponent, he also...  well...  there's a bit of explaining to do...

He believes global warming is not manmade.  He also wrote about HIV not being a disease but that "exposure to homosexuality" might have been killing young men instead of AIDS.  This was written in 1995, when he claims there was still a debate over the causes of AIDS and such.

Needless to say, Art Robinson is a very interesting man.

He also apparently publishes an interesting book for Christian homeschooling curriculums...

http://blogs.alternet.org/speakeasy/201 … -children/

For the better part of a decade at least Robinson has been reprinting, marketing, and selling a virulently racist 19th Century English boys’ adventure novel that suggests Africans are like retarded children.

“By Sheer Pluck”, by George Alfred Henty, is set in Africa and features a sympathetic character patronizing Africans as “just like children” and declaring, “the intelligence of an average negro is about equal to that of a European child of ten years old… Left alone to their own devices they retrograde into a state little above their native savagery."

...

Here’s what Art Robinson’s Home Schooling Curriculum web site has to say about George Alfred Henty’s books:

"Our initial printing emphasizes the wonderful collection of historical novels written by G. A. Henty. While some of these books have been in print, two-thirds of them have been out of print and generally unavailable to home school readers.

G. A. Henty wrote at a time when the teaching of a deep Christian faith, high moral character, sound ethical principles, a strong work ethic, simple personal humility, and self-confidence based on real accomplishments were considered essential to the education of each young person. This is in sharp contrast to today’s tax-financed schools where these values are deliberately excluded. The Henty books provide training in history and in many of the highest aspects of human character, while holding the attention of the reader with tales of adventure written by a master story teller. Not only do Henty’s heroes serve as excellent examples to people of all ages, his own vocabulary, grammar, and literary skills serve as outstanding examples to young writers, readers, and speakers of the English language. In learning to write, as in learning to speak, the examples that children follow are the most important factors in their accomplishments.

American young people should read not a few Henty books, but all 99 of them. Taken together, they constitute a superb course in world history and an education in some of the the highest aspects of human behavior in the heroes – and in some of the lowest aspects in the villains."

And then there's the aforementioned issue in the Maddow clip about an anonymous group that bypassed campaign finance rules by making a commercial for Robinson and distributing it with about $150,000.

This is one interesting candidate with equally interesting sponsors.

Any thoughts?

How about for a change of pace you pick on a Democrat?

Something. I'm sure there's at least one of them out there offering fluffy bunnies for everyone (but not to eat, only to love and cuddle) in exchange for their vote.

These Jesus freaks give the whole concept of home schooling a terrible stigma. I'd home school my future kids if I had the opportunity simply because I know I would be a better educator than any school teacher possibly could. Nothing beats one on one time.

Except NC doesn't have anything remotely similar to Eugene.

If you are not wearing Birkenstocks and/or Patchouli oil in Eugene you are in the minority. It's hippie central.

I don't think you really understand I've been to Asheville and there's really nothing on the east coast that is remotely comparable to Eugene except parts of Vermont.

eugene isn't much different than any other college town.  the portland area is more liberal.  you just see more hippies down here because the weather's better for growing weed.

Ahh as an almost violent supporter of republicans, one of my best friends said "We know there's shitty politicians running the country, we have the candidates to back it up!"

haha sure there's loonies on both sides, but nothing makes me lawl more than someone getting destroyed in an argument and reverting to 3rd grade rhetoric to pass the time until it's over.  Paladino is KING of this type of shit.  Call him out on one thing, and you are now "undermining the entire process of democracy".  Good show...

It's typically the "quirkier" ones who you tend to hear about most often.

I believe someone said recently: melodrama = ratings

Unfortunately, it makes people think all candidates/officials are caricatures like the ones they show.
