I've tried multi with a friend, but it's pretty glitchy.
My friend sees mobs fine, but for me their just frozen in position, and I can't see where they really are. Can't take damage from them either.
I was standing around when a huge hole appeared next to me out of nowhere. I guess a creeper exploded, but I couldn't see him or hear the explosion, and I didn't take any damage.

Some don't drop, some drop one, some drop two... average is ~1
You can easily get enough for 3 TNTs in a night...

If it does, you'd have the default ~5 min before it de-spawns.

The simplest way is to place two torches on opposite sides of the spawner, directly on the adjacent blocks (or put 4 torches all around it to be sure).
Mind you, that sometimes mobs can still spawn, when you remove certain blocks and create a hole which is dark enough again.
Happened to me twice, when I was looting all the (rare) mossy cobblestone blocks from the dungeon floors.
Quite some brick block shitting experiences.
