like 1 in 3 cars down here in the southern counties (the nice ones, anyway) are cars in the £20-50k bracket
like one in 4 cars here is a typical business merc/bmw/audi. brand new ones, or at most 2-3 yrs old. they're how much?
£30k isn't much on an overall chart of cars - it simply isn't a 'rich' purchase. fact.

it's all relative and some american doing a straight currency-conversion is about as sensical as a scot trying to dictate what an 'expensive luxury car' is defined as in the affluent english south. in some southern american states a nice ford pick-up truck is a 'nice car', by relative standards of wealth and quality... but it wouldn't float on the same scale of comparison in golfing millionaire surrey countryside. it's that simple.

I'm not a fan of the medium-sized Range Rovers tbh.
I mean they aren't advertised for use off-road anyway, but more for the family-man with an above-average income who wants a car to bring his family up and down to the mountains or whatever, and at the same time bring himself to work. So I understand the idea of going for a cross between a full-blown seven seater and a city-friendly 5 seater.
But it just doesn't work. It's a bit too big to comfortably drive in the city, and too small to really pack it up for a full vacation. The back seats are smaller than several competitors, the seventh seat hardly qualifies as a seat, and the luggage space isn't really enough for a full family going on a skiing vacation.
It all seems like a big compromise to me.
I find the Merc GL to be a lot better. Yes, it's big as fuck, but so is the Range Rover - they're both awkward in the city, so the difference is slim. However, you get a comfortable second row of seats, a survivable third row, lots of baggage space and of course Merc quality (Range Rovers have reportedly gotten better, but still worth a point).
If you want an SUV that works in the city, I'd rather have an X-5 or 3 or 6.
