Prisoners in England and Wales should work a 40-hour week, Justice Secretary Ken Clarke is expected to say.
Ministers are also considering building a large-scale "working prison" on the site of a factory, possibly a recycling plant.

Mr Clarke's aim is for inmates in publicly-run prisons to work a 40-hour week, for which they would be paid the minimum wage, with part of their earnings going to victims.

In his speech Mr Clarke will say jail is a place of "sluggishness and boredom" for many prisoners, where getting up in the morning is "optional".

He wants offenders to prepare for life on the outside by establishing the habit of "routine hard work".

Justice minister Nick Herbert told the BBC that often prisoners were left locked in their cells for too long with little to do and needed "purposeful activity and work" to help address mental health and drugs issues and prepare them for work: "Too often, I'm, afraid, we are just warehousing prisoners, often making them worse not better."

He said there could be industries in prisons - where there is space - but said the "lion's share" of prisoners' wages would go to victims' organisations.

Jolly good idea.

1)Rehabiliation - After internment this should make it slightly easier for prisoners to re-integrate into society
2)Money - Part of the proceeds would go to victims charitys/trusts, and i'd imagine some money would be skimmed off and reinvested into the prison service
3)Prison shouldn't be easy - Time working = less time lying in a cell and more time doing productive shit

Bear in mind this is about the UK, so people outside of the UK might want to read up on our current prison system here and here.

yes the article didn't delve too much into how the money would be split, so i avoided tackling that point. i've pm'd baggs so hopefully he can shed some light on the whole idea

or just be sexy, he's good at that.

I dont really want to play the devils advocate here, but wouldnt it be taking jobs away from those who may desperately need one? I mean sure make the inmates work, but paying them seems a bit too far...

If you don't pay them then it's slave labor. They also need to pay them enough (even if they don't actually receive more than a pittance) in order to keep costs up so they can't completely underbid the market.

The real problem with the idea is that if it becomes an established industry, and some warden down the line wishes to expand his empire, they might start impressing people off the street with fictitious or minor crimes. That's the real danger with prison industry.

they get paid already, its not a lot but its an incentive for them. and gets them out of their cells/off the wing etc...

but really, to understand prison, you have to work there/had worked there.

thats the argument the tory's are having. also it might be taking industrial jobs away from law abiding citizens.

the prison service already bid for contracts including assembly and re-packaging.

prisoners currently do work, some prisons have ALL their residents working thus they are called 'training' prisons.

I think it would be a good thing, many of these people will never have worked 40 hrs a week and to experience it would wake them up.
I used to work 60-70hrs a week without any trouble.

Actually if they got token wages for their efforts, you'd have a better chance at motivating them to rehabilitate. Perhaps the model could be anything they earn beyond basic upkeep can be put into an account for when they get out of prison to help them get back on their feet, or go to help maintain their family. More people would be willing to hire convicts if one of the things you gained from prison was a work ethic.

well some money for them getting out of prison might deter crime.

Exactly, its why companies hire ex-military - they may be dumb as fuck and have no useful skills, but they have a work ethic
