LBJ, at my work we have 48 laptops. all but three are Dell, and those three are what's left of other brands - at one time 23.

no laptops perfect, and i have RMA'd a couple for vidcards, a couple for the port replicator (dock) and one for the screen. budget for the warranty.

those specs are solid, you could run a CADD program on that . . .

Well that might actually be handy, because when I upgrade again I'll probably give this to my brother who is a poor Architecture student and still running a 1.8Ghz Dual core, 2GB RAM and 250GB HDD desktop for his CAD programs

Sounds good, I'm not up on laptops, so I can't say for sure you'll find something cheaper with those specs, but that seems a solid build. Will this be your main computer? Cause I would recommend finding a nice screen to use in conjunction with it, a 19" or something, cause you will want the extra space.

Goddamn that's a good laptop.

Bet it weighs a tonne

Or has a battery life of 5 minutes.

There's gotta be a downside somewhere.

E: Cammy, it's got a 1920x1080 screen, I don't think he'll be hard pressed for real estate.

It's only 15.6". I know if I had to rely on my laptop I'd want a 17" or 19" secondary monitor for documents.

oh sorry LBJ, our resident tech badge holder has passed judgement, and even though i manage a fleet of almost fifty dell laptops with nine years of practical experience with them, he says there's a downside.

Nah it won't be my main computer, I already have a i7 930, 6GB RAM, 2TB HDD, HD4870 desktop.

The battery life doesn't concern me that much as this will mainly be for when I'm staying at my friends place (probably 3 or so days a week starting next year, so I can't be bothered moving my desktop that much) and using it in the uni library (where I can plug it in anyway).

Edit: haha don't want to start another camm vs fin vs burnz fight here

Me and burnzz like each other, me and fin like each other, burnzz has a strong dislike for fin. Thinks he's a young whippersnapper, or something old timely like that.

Yeah I was thinking about that. My 6 cell last about 2 hours. My mate managed to squeeze 21 hours out of his MBP

It seems Dell only offer a 6 cell battery, not a 9 cell. Will this be a substantial problem (considering the only time I will be using battery is maybe in uni lectures just taking notes)

Given the awesome specs of that laptop, that battery will drain in approximately 9.8 seconds.

probably worth it. I wasn't being serious about the 9.8 seconds but given lectures here can be 3 hours, that battery is not going to last 3 hours.

chatting with dell support at the moment. They reckon it will last 4, but they haven't answered my question about purchasing a 9 cell battery separately...

E: fuckers ended the chat on me without replying

Its not all that common to have 3 hour lectures, thats usually a social science thing (and those arent even real courses, but I digress) and based on the computer I'd assume hes not using it for anything social science related...  And usually with laptops like that they have a power saving mode where they shut off the graphics card and run the processor at half speed, saving a shitload of power.

Well I suppose that's right. Windows 7 has power saver mode, I use it on my laptop when at college, but it doesn't save much batter since my laptop is so terribad.

All my lectures are 1 hour with the exception of one 2 hour lecture per week... I don't think it will really be a problem, but I think I'll shop around for a bit longer still
