I think apathy hits all teachers sooner or later. Perhaps its just better concealed at private schools.

There is the argument that home schooled people lack social graces because they have basically been sequestered, but a good parent can mitigate all that with plenty of social `learning sessions`.

The Khan Academy is something that hopes to regulate all that.

I knew a home schooled guy who actually knew Latin!

you cannot learn how to socialise. you have to go out and actually socialise with people. dealing with people can only be learned through experience.

Let me rephrase.  When I said social 'learning sessions', I meant exactly what you suggested; home school kids shouldn't be sequestered.  I'm not talking about reading in a book how to interact with a person socially.

Granted in public school kids interact socially with kids their age than those home schooled, but is it always for the better?

I don't think they have poor social skills. In fact, maybe it is better they have less exposure to some of their peers.

well that child will probably mature faster then their peers which is good, but they'll get pretty socially disconnected.

Some people who are socially disconnected and don't mind it have more time to focus on work and learning, but not everyone and I was just suggesting that awful or stupid teen behavior from your peers at high school might be less likely to find their way into home school kids behaviors.

Conflict resolution and being able to interact with people are skills you cant be taught by a parent. No matter how much meaningless academia you know you're going to get walked all over once you hit college/work.

I can't imagine how subjecting kids to Middle School does them any good in life.

I once listened regularly to Glenn Beck. I was an "insider" at his website. I was a subscriber to Fusion (his magazine). I even have his book "The Real America"... here's the thing, you spit the "koolaid" out once you realize it's poison. At what point did getting smarter become a bad thing in America? Instead of belittling people that come around to your opinion you should be praising them. That is how you progress. This country wouldn't be so divided if people could put aside thier pride and the self serving need to rub it in.

Chances are I heard of him long before you (Tampa 970 WFLA is perhaps best known nationally as the station that gave national hosts Glenn Beck and Lionel their starts in talk radio).. his show was wayyy different back in the day.  He also ripped a lot of his schtick off of Phil Hendrie.  .. the satire stuff. He found his money train though.

So, nice that we had this little aside and all.  But lets discuss the disappointment former ardent Obama supporters are having.  Even the creator of the Hope poster we saw during the election is loosing hope.

Sure is a good thing that not one bush supporter lost faith during his 2 terms...

I think it was "Texas Tea" instead of koolaid :-P

Looks like Obama's Approval rating is still going down.  Whatever he's doing is not helping Here's a 9/26/2010 poll:
