This is part of it, yeah. A persons sexuality is not supposed to be discussed in the military, gay or straight. That said, men and women who get 'found out' shouldn't be kicked out of the military for it. That's just stupid.

The only reason I see any issue whatsoever with DADT's repeal is that it would be a logistical nightmare. Right now males and females are split up and live separately. Do you now house lesbians with guys and gays with the women? Stupid, yes, but you have to understand the military's dress right dress obsession. Everything in its place etc.
You were in the military, weren't you? Want to tell me how long did it take before discussions became sexual?

Well if i was in the military i would have some issues with showering with a hairy morbidly obese woman, i don't expect the government to give a damn about my issues.
Obese women can't pass the physical. Still though, when did the Republicans take control of the Senate? Still was almost a Democrat supermajority last time I checked.

well most people in this country are catholics, catholics hate gays, so by simple math once again we can blame religion.
Protestants make the majority of religious U.S. kthx.

Catholics are the majority in the most liberal gay loving states.

The Catholic Church, 68,115,001 members
The Southern Baptist Convention, 16,228,438 members
The United Methodist Church, 7,853,987 members

Full text.
The largest religion in the US is Christianity, practiced by the majority of the population (76% in 2008[3]). From those queried, roughly 51.3% of Americans are Protestants, 25% are Catholics, and 1.7% are Mormons (the name commonly used to refer to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), and 1.6% to various other Christian  denominations.[10]  Christianity was introduced during the period of European colonization.

By the 2010 Yearbook of American and Canadian Churches, from which members in the United States are combined with Canadian members, and of the National Council of Churches, the five largest denominations are[11]:

    * The Catholic Church, 68,115,001 members
    * The Southern Baptist Convention, 16,228,438 members
    * The United Methodist Church, 7,853,987 members
    * The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5,974,041 members
    * The Church of God in Christ, 5,499,875 members

Due to its large population and history, the United States has numerically more Christians (and more Protestants) than any other country in the world. Other countries, however, have higher percentages of Christians (and of Protestants) within their total populations.

I will check with other sources. I don't trust those numbers 100%.

On official work time? Rarely. 'Off work' in the barracks and stuff? All the time. The problem is that soldiers are considered to be on the clock 24/7 and the military can and does control their every waking breath.

As I said, the only issue I can possibly think of that the military could have is of simple logistics, and it's not a difficult problem to solve. Hell, I say tear down all the walls and have the men and women comingled from the word go It will kill off the sexual tension.
So once someone says they're gay any talk about that would be "off work"?

In a 56-43 vote, Senate Democratic leaders fell short of the 60 votes they needed to proceed to the 2011 defense authorization bill, which included language to repeal the Clinton-era “Don’t ask, don’t tell” law. Every Senate Republican present and three Democrats voted to block debate on the bill.

Replace Republicans with Congress in the title please.

It wouldn't be brought up while in formation or conducting company business etc. I don't understand the argument in the first place anyway. I think people have an image of gay people as flamers dancing around on floats in their underwear. While that does exist (and does far more harm to their own cause, but that's a different point) it's hardly the type that would be attracted to military service in the first place. The fears are unfounded.

Of course, just you can't totally blame this on the Catholics. It's as much if not more the Protestants fault. I don't see how it was possible for the country to swing so Catholic unless that 2010 number doesn't reflect small churches that don't report to central authorities. That would make sense.

If I'm not mistaken, the DREAM act killed this bill.  To be honest, I would've voted against it too as long as that's in it.

I'd like to see what each person on the forums who has served in the U.S. military thinks about this, proper opinions from people who have dealt with it first hand.

Apathetic. I think it should be repealed but it's not an issue I'd fight for

could be wrong.

The Republicans won twice here, they delayed the repeal of the DADT and blocked the Senate from considering the DREAM act.

It's all political posturing anyway. They put that crap in the bill on purpose so they could say to their constituents that the Republicans voted against gays, hispanics, abortion and the military. There's no other reason that all that crap would be added onto one bill otherwise.

Something we agree on :-)

Sad how Congress uses the military as a social incubator.  Personally I don't know if Gays work well in the military and I wouldn't presume to know so I would rather delegate that to the commanders.  But if they do allow it then I hope sexual misconduct is treated equally between all pairs of sexes.

What exactly do we achieve by flushing these people out of the military? I'd rather get rid of some of the meat-headed nitwits who are a danger to themselves and their comrades.

I'm not trying to 'say it' like a douche, even if you want to interpret it that way. An institution established to kill people (and they were; forget war justification for the moment) being worried about gays DOES strike me as absolutely hilarious.
