Stick a screwdriver into your PC, or better still the PSU, when its powered up.

OT: Its either the CPU, Mobo, PSU, RAM or one of the cables or connections.

You do know you can boot your computer to rule out broken on-button by completing the circuit on the motherboard with a piece of metal, right?

I used to start up my computer that way for almost a year when I didn't have a case to put my parts in. Yes I was a cheap bastard, still am.

right. it's an abit ip35 pro. the led display on the mobo flashes with a '2' for a while and then stops

also a red led near the main mobo power connectors flashes intermittently at varying strengths...

i have searched the net long and hard and cannot find out anything about the '2'. even abit's documentation sucks.

can't you just bridge the psu with a screwdriver?  unplug psu, connect wires (not sure which ones) to screwdriver, plug in psu to wall, see if fan on PSU moves?

i think green is ground and black is neutral?

this will either indicate or eliminate the psu as the problem...

or see if anyone you know has a multimeter and use that to test the psu

Oh, it'll be everything wrong with it on the diagnosis. Whatever you do, don't act clueless and say you 'tried everything.' Just say you don't have time to work on it.

I'd say the PSU first. You can get a cheap power supply tester to see if anything comes up with unwanted values.

Didn't look at your mobo specs, but if applicable, make sure no jumpers are anywhere where they aren't supposed to be and that the cmos battery is firmly in place. If you transported it in a vertical position, there's a chance that the weight of the CPU fan and/or video card may have damaged the board itself on bumps.

What do weekly living costs have to do with a broken computer?

+2,865|6679
having a computer = greatly reduced weekly living costs

is that so complicated for you?

the amount of 'leisure' hours one spends on a computer... doing small nothings... playing games... etc.

are then spent outside, at bars/pubs/clubs, or generally spending a shit-ton of cash.

rocket science?
