Never been necessary to hit a woman. I'm twice the weight of most women, 6" to 12" taller than they are, and any yelling hysterics they might throw at me are generally amusing rather than threatening.
Besides, nothing pisses them off more than a guy being completely rational, talking in a normal tone of voice, and generally tearing a hole in their hysterical ranting without ever raising his voice.
Restrained a few that were going 'full psycho' on someone else, or about to injure themselves and others.
Even had to deal with a couple that decided to charge someone twice their weight, with a Judo throw.
(Modified Yama Arashi(upper) & Tsuri Goshi(lower) gives very good control over their landing, so they're not hurt as badly as an uncontrolled landing from another throw. And ends in a good restraining position, if suddenly finding themselves flat out on the ground wasn't enough to cool them off.)
Blocked a few punches thrown by women, with enough force in the block that they didn't want to try throwing another anytime soon.
Never had to hit a woman, though.
(Note: probably 99% of the above incidents were while wading into the middle of an impending girl-on-girl catfight, in a bar or club. Drunken military women get strange at times...)

Point is always to control the situation well enough that nobody gets really hurt.
Not about being mad and hurting someone - it's about de-escalating, separating, and removing.
Another 100 pound woman doesn't have the overmatch to make sure the 100 pound instigator isn't hurt, a 200 pound guy (that's been playing with Kodokan Judo, off and on, since age 5) does.
