Gears of War 3 is set to release on the Xbox in Autumn 2011, 3 years after the release of the last installment.

Some of the current, notable, known improvements / additions: (MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS)

4 player coop campaign mode
Almost every weapon in the game now has its own executions. IE: The Scorcher (flamethrower) gets thrown into the enemies body, upon which the scorcher is fired and causes flames to come out of the body through the eyes and mouth.
New weapon: the Pendulam-era lancer, which is a lancer with a bayonnet instead of a chainsaw.
The Locust have a unique execution which involves ripping the arm off a downed foe and beating them to death with it (!) you can see this in the E3 campaign video
An enemy used as a meatshield can now be grenade tagged and kicked towards enemies.
There are 2 storylines to follow in SP mode: one which follows Marcus/Dom and one following Cole/Baird (and their squadmates), which then supposedly links up later on.
The COG's main foe is now the Lambent, after the Locust appear to have been mostly killed off after Gears2. The lambent enemies confirmed so far, are lambent versions of familiar locust enemies, including the Berserker.
Ice-T has been confirmed to do the voice-overs for one of the new characters.
Female COG soldiers will now feature in the game, including characters from the novels and comic-book series
The next of the Carmines, "Clay", will feature in the game. His fate was decided in the "Decide Carmine's Fate" campaign which raised $150000 for a charity.
So called "Arcade Mode", which is a new addition to the campaign. You can fight through the game with friends on coop to enter in a competitive version of the campaign.
A double-barrelled shotgun. Yes, a new shotgun.
Improved matchmaking (we shall see on that one...)
Nothing new on Horde mode yet, although there is a new variation known as "Beast Mode". This is Horde, but in reverse, i.e. you get to play as the locust attacking the COG. You can be various different locust, including tickers, bloodmounts and berserkers.

Pah, first one was alright. Never was interested in the second. More of the same.

Story got a bit predictable too. Kill locust -> little bit of dialogue -> more locust killing -> some dialogue -> more locust killing -> cutscene, new area.

The only memorable moments that were different was escaping in the massive car tank thing, crossing the water on that flimsy boat thing, and perhaps the finale.

Second campaign was basically a string of rather... well epic action scenes. Think CoD4 style. Well put together imo and absolutely awesome for co-op with a few mates.

Yes, the games are cheesy as Bega, but they feel a lot like saay... the Die Hard/Lethal Weapon movies of the gaming medium. Mindless fun. Should be good, at least worth a rent, if not buying.

Definitely wouldn't suit on PC. People bitch about consolisation of games and porting games from console to PC... Can't have shit both ways...

it's obvious, because if you had genuinely played the full range of 'classic' and 'best ever' game series, you wouldn't make GoW comments like you just did. it's that simple. it has nothing to do with you disagreeing with my own personal opinion-- it's more like your claim disagrees and contrasts with the general feeling of everyone within the 'gaming establishment' (e.g. critics, hardcore gamers, magazines, review sites etc.). GoW is a big fish in a small console pond, basically. it's not an industry leading title and is most definitely not an historical entry into the gaming canon.

I've played Beast Mode. Reverse Horde basically. Definitely a fun mode, but wished it could be PVP.

I played GoW2 at a friends house. That weekend, I bought an Xbox and the GoW2 limited edition and have been playing it ever since. That was last January.

It is looking great, and I like how it seems to have soooo much more to do. So many modes for SP and MP, not to mention coop
