This is a political move to appease his constituents. There's nothing an M1 can do that can't be done with a modern semi-auto, and the people who buy them are probably going to fire maybe one or two shots with them (if at all), polish the thing up and put it on a wall never to be used again.

Besides which, I bet hardly anybody really wanted one until this ban hit the news. Maybe the feds want to drum up publicity for when they unban it.

Here's a novel concept for the President:
Stop writing new laws, start enforcing existing ones.

Plenty of existing gun laws on the books.
I know this administration (and the last) aren't real big on reading up on existing laws, they'd rather make their own up from scratch, but.. really now?

Oh, and while they're reading up on existing gun laws, they can peruse the 5th and 14th Amendments.
