Win7 is so beautiful. I am absolutely blown away by its sexiness. I thought OSX was gorgeous but this... this is perfection.

i dont have the space for a desktop anymore, one of the main reasons i sold my old one. it takes up too much room and just looks chaotic in the spare room. the studio xps will probably be the one i buy actually.

i don't find it any more particularly aesthetic than vista... it's essentially the exact same. the taskbar is slightly different, but... meh.

no, liq, i don't get the UAC prompt for anything anymore. but the UAC-shield is stuck on my steam icon

And it *only* happens on the Steam icon?

I think that the taskbar icons probably get cached somewhere, but I'm not really sure. You could perhaps try something like CCleaner and look at the advanced options under the OS section. Stuff like prefetch data, and that. Might be something about icons/shortcuts somewhere.

It might disappear next time Steam updates.

I'm out of ideas, tbh

I already purchased a 32gb 3rd gen (waiting for it to ship), don't think I could wait that long without an mp3 player... and chances are I won't really use the new camera feature.

Matt, I'll buy your 4770. Name a price buddy. I could do with CFing it with my 4670
Seriously, wouldn't be worth the bother. Drivers would fuck you up, and end up giving you a very marginal difference in speed, but a massive load of microstuttering and bugs and crashes and things. Not worth it.

Matt, I'd recommend getting a GTX 460, probably this one, very good cooler, reputable brand, 3 year warranty (4 year for another $25) and a steal for only $244 (over here the same card is £195, or $300).

In regards to your processor, E8400 is a really good, and you could probably squeeze out another .6Ghz from it and easily max out the 460, except on processor intensive games (BF:BC2, SupCom, etc). If you wanted a cooler I'd say the Freezer7Pro Rev2 is about the best bang for buck cooler you could get for dual cores. If you need any help check out this thread, and you can ask me on XFire if you need help
Ok, so I'm sold on the 460 after reading some reviews. Can't wait to get it!

Now tell your brother the 4770 is a great deal and we can split the profits

Quick question:

My GTX460 has three ports, one mini HDMI and two DVI. The adapters that came with it are VGA to DVI and DVI to HDMI. I want to use the GPU to put out video to my television on occasion, but will the DVI carry sound out and onto the HDMI port via the adapter? If not, can I configure it to do so? Trying to avoid having to buy the mini-HDMI to HDMI adapter...

Nope. DVI wont carry sound.  Whether or not you use an adaptor.

Yep, Prime minister is right, only HDMI can carry sound.

That's what I thought. Thanks for confirming that. Guess I'll be going to the store later on this week... damn. (the store I buy my stuff from is a bit of a ways on the edge of Vienna)

As far as I know with the adapter you will get both.  (To the OP try and find out it's free if since you already have the adapter).

While it's true that a DVI connection is only video, the plug on the card has extra pins that can output sound, which the adapter to HDMI uses, this is how Nvidia has done it for a while I believe (with the originals needing sound from your audio device to be plunged into the card).  It works like VGA from a DVI port, DVI is digital but you can pass an analog signal through unused pins.

The one in the pics part number ends in -AR which means lifetime warranty.  Not sure of any other differences.

wow interesting, didn't know that. Can anyone try this out? But I'm thinking the sound will be pretty bad because of all the interferences and longer path through the adapter

I really doubt it, never had any problem using a DVI to VGA adapter and that's dealing with an analog signal which as far as I know is more susceptible to interference from such things than a digital signal.

Look for individual timings on the RAM and go for whatever features/warranties you like the best of on the cards, as well as stock clock speeds.

For the GPUs, warranty's always a good selling price, IMO, as are the connector interfaces.

With the RAM, just go for the one with lower latencies (which are the 4 numbers in a row, like 5-5-5-9).

Post links to each product if you're having trouble.

Great news, boys and girls! If you have a GTX 460 and you only have a DVI to HDMI adapter (like the one with my ASUS ENGTX460), you can most definitely put out sound via the DVI connector SO LONG as you're using the HDMI adapter. It's really simple to make work under Windows 7, too (have I said how much I fucking love this OS?). Just go into your Nvidia control panel via the Windows control panel and click the button for sound settings. OR you can go directly into your Windows control panel, click hardware and then sounds. Then you should have a list of audio output choices. Highlight your TV (which should be there) and simply click the button to set it as your standard (or maybe under English it's called default?) and you're good to go. Just did it on mine. Be sure to clone the display from your main monitor onto the TV, though, otherwise all you see is the desktop and you get to put out sound and nothing else.
