oh, that's crazy! we can't take masters degrees in the arts until we have our BA...

and only the best arts scholars can skip on to do a PhD in their subject / get a research placement without an MA

i guess competition is so high that it has just effectively made the MA the basic-requirement

Never did get done like that, but went on a similar bender after one did me wrong. I had some remorse about mowing through the cash... I saw pictures of her recently and she's really let herself go. She was fucking wild though... .

At least in the US, science PhD's are generally funded and you get some sort of living stipend. My friend getting his PhD in Physics gets a stipend of like $22k/year for living and school is covered completely. You do need to write a thesis and all that, but it should basically come naturally after the years of work you put into it. 4-5 years of experimentation leaves a lot to write about.

What are you reading is a pretty extinct term nowadays, my old head of sixth form used to say it but he'd been helping people apply to uni for decades.

Some courses still use the term though, probably English lit and the likes.

that's a posh middle-class thing.

normally you go up to a classic university to 'read' a subject.
