The fire seen in many of the pics is called a flare, it is meant to burn off the oil and natural gas as it arrives at the surface.

This is old news now, all the hubbub has died and the environment has probably gone back to normal now. Not that it was ever probably seriously threatened, maybe it'll take a few % points off the fishermen who were all earning 6-7 figure salaries anyway.

All I can see is a giant oil slick that covers the entire gulf of Mexico. That region will never recover.

He never saw anything more than what you would see in your driveway after washing your car. A thin layer of multi-colored rainbow that dilutes quickly.

Besides, oil spills create jobs.  Think of all the money that can be made through cleanup efforts.

BP used free-labour from prison populations. after a media furore... they sourced the same labour but put them in plain-clothes.

so no, no money found in clean-ups. slave labour.

Southern states use prison populations to clean up every day. They're called chain gangs and are usually used to keep the sides of interstates free from trash. They just redeployed them for use on the beaches.

i know that. im not saying it's a scandalous, controversial thing to use prison populations for public service.

im just saying there is no 'reinvestment' or recirculation of money into the economy because of clean-up 'employment'.

How do you figure? BP paid out a lot of money to those involved in the cleanup. Indeed, they paid out a far higher daily wage than the fishing boats would receive on a normal basis from their own commercial activities. The spill pumped billions of dollars into the local economies at the expense of BP. I'd call that a recirculation of money...

You going to rejoin reality soon? You can't wish away oil, and you can't wish away the fact that all of the oil would've been burned anyway, leak or no.

im sure those short-term petty recirculations make up for the 80% loss of yields for the vietnamese shrimping industry... for the foreseeable future...

no, im not a commie. but im not in the PR-bag of BP, which you are, apparently.

Fishermen in the Gulf are back at work and pulling in record hauls btw... IJS.

Like the mosque, this story was blown way out of proportion.

Why would I want to wish away oil?  I actually work for a cleaning chemical company -- it works out pretty well for me actually.

Nonsense...  Those Vietnamese shrimpers should've been prepared for what the market had in store for them...

The good people of BP just made a slight mistake along with Transocean and Halliburton.  It was the government's fault for setting safety standards and not consistently enforcing them.  This just tricked these poor CEOs into thinking safety standards weren't needed.

It's always the government's fault...

Like all news it gets blown out of proportion ... not so much in the BP oilspill though, they have removed much of the surface oil ... but how did they do that? ... oh yeah, they used a chemical that made the oil sink into the ocean and now it will continue to polute for eons ... good job ...
