Art is mostly a luxury of the rich. Culturally, it's important, but if you're a working class person, you should focus on something that gets you employment after school. For the working class, art should mostly be a hobby rather than a career focus.Uzique wrote:

partly mentioned in turq's post above: 'culture'. it's an expensive business.Cybargs wrote:
ISB (international school of bangkok) has a 25 million dollar campus... And I think that's overkill, even for a privately funded international school. How the fuck did they spend half a billion dollars on a school wtf.
commissioning some ground-breaking, forward-looking architectural project for the school building will cost megabuck$$$.
the buildings and campus is obviously there as a cultural, architectural and artistic symbol, more so than a functional facility.
stuff like that costs a lot; art has a lot of intangible 'value' attributed to it.
e.g. this cost $120 million in 1990

A state that doesn't know the value of a dollar, is bankrupt, and still overpaying on underperforming schools.
This surprises anyone?

While this is true, I would argue that the expensive nature of art is why it should be a privately funded thing. For the most part, it already is, but there are cases where art seems to take precedence in public funding in situations where the essentials are still not being met by the system.Uzique wrote:

In short, art's importance in education is secondary to practical skills for the labor force. Again, that's not saying art is unimportant -- we just have to get our priorities straight.

every now and then a state/nation/government likes to leave its mark for posterity in the symbol of an architectural or artistic piece.
i think that's an admirable thing-- perhaps poorly timed in an age of economic austerity, but admirable in principle, nevertheless.

just like the 'superstitious' pricing on those totally non-artistic, non-cultural, entirely-economic veblen goods, right?
luxury pricing isn't only the preserve of the artsy-fartsy fags with their faggy art. get real.

What imbues something with value? Well, there's the base materials that make up the item, and then there is peoples perception of the item which also drives its value. Luxury items are priced higher simply because they are marketed and sold as luxury items, even though the base materials involved in their production do not differ greatly from the lower end model.Uzique wrote:

Then there's scarcity. Considering the billion or so people who claim to be artists on this planet, the value of the work they create should be right up there with a steaming pile of dog shit. I'm sure this school was designed by a person who dedicated his or her life to becoming a famous artist. Thus, as much frippery and cost was added to it as possible in order to increase the stature of the artists reputation. Nothing was gained by anyone involved except the artist, and whoever signed off on it and thus will take credit for it's creation. No one will give a fuck about the building except art school students who jizz themselves when imagining the 'impact' they can have on the world.
Art has it's place on the mantles of the wealthy. It does not belong in the architectural qualities of a public building, let alone a public school. A school should be utilitarian in design, not a shitty ripoff of the Taj Mahal.

True. There is a need for culture and art in the world.Uzique wrote:

Real art reminds us we're capable of greatness, subtlety, insight, genius, and so much more than the mundane day-to-day existence we spend most of our time at.
Then again, Bureaucratic drones know shit about real art.
Their idea of the value of art is strictly tied to how large of a check they get to write.
There are a few problems with this California school
- Large bureaucracies, such as the LAUSD, generally couldn't tell the difference between Jackson Pollock and Jack Shit.
- The state of California is broke.
- They need to be looking at things with tangible value. Intangibles are for when you have excess funds to piss away.
- Give the kids a good solid fundamental education first, then refine their tastes and culture. It cannot be done in reverse order.(How in the hell are you going to teach a kid to appreciate the subtleties of fine literature, when he can't even read?)

Hows this. I SHIT ON CANVAS AND CALL IT HUMAN ART.

Do all the flags of the world in human bodily fluids.
Might have to get creative and rearrange the color scheme for a few flags.
Call it "The World : Blood, Sweat, Tears, and Something Else"
OR, to continue my previous theme;
Solitude - 3' x 3' canvas, two blue paint footprints on the left and bottom edge, a Ritz cracker in the center.
Spoiler (highlight to read):
Poking fun at the pretentious bullshit that too often passes for Art

pointless addition to the discussion. im sorry your friend's artwork isn't up your street. what does that have to do with the status of art in society in general? not all artists are drawing comic-illustrations of people with their spines removed. and how exactly is art and culture "gay"? i feel like im losing intelligence by even venturing to ask these asinine questions...
the last few posts are a comedy parade, tbh. are you guys talking about architectural idioms and the benefit of state-sponsored 'progression', or are you taking the opportunity to shit on age-15 DeviantArt conceptions of 'art'? you know without me needing to tell you that you don't have much of a clue about the art world-- so why talk shit? it just makes you look silly. for every person trying hard to contrive themselves as an 'artist' by covering themselves in blue paint and copulating in a room covered in canvas, there's a real artist pushing forward a real aesthetic. what's the value? commodifying art and reducing everything down to an economic, utilitarian conception of 'value' is pointless, and rather arbitrary. did you guys ever stop think that we wouldn't have the greek classical temples, the pyramids or any great cathedrals, public monuments or heritage-buildings if it wasn't for the existence of art? architecture can be more than just function, you know.
