The problem with cutting these types of funds to retired public service workers is that not all of them are dishonest people trying to exploit the system. ATG, I think you're generalizing a little bit too much. I know some very kind police officers who do their job well, I know some who have been shot and cannot serve in the police force anymore due to their injuries, those kind of people should receive their pay check at the end of the month for their excellent service.

I'm sure there's quite a few public workers who exploit the system though, I just don't know if it's worth removing the whole system. Certainly something can be done in the current method to minimize these problems.

ATG, are you seriously saying that all firefighters, medics, policemen, and military personnel are morally equivalent to gangbangers and thieves?

Patriotism, community, compassion, duty, service, selflessness.
These concepts don't exist in your world anymore?
Everyone is a crook, looking for an angle to screw someone else over?

It looks as though Dr Strangelove has brought a case of Lemon Pledge.

Though in the case of dear ol' ATG, it is beginning to look like a case of
"check risers - risers okay.  Check canopy - canopy on fire"
or, perhaps, a self-applied tourniquet to treat a minor headwound.

So a little more slippery on the slope may well be redundant.
I think we are seeing terminal velocity already.

If 70% are taking early retirement on almost full salary I'd have to agree - would apply to any profession.

so, 70% of the California Highway Patrol is now representative of all public service professionals everywhere?

Bullshit.

I guess ATG is referring to other posts about public service members demanding high wages, little work and generous retirement privileges, its not exactly a new story, esp in California.
The OP refers to firefighters and CHP for a start.

LAPD Don't seem to happy about having it cut.
http://lapd.com/news/headlines/irs_rule … t_options/

As it says in the article people can get a pension for longer than they worked if they retire after 30 years service, so conceivably people could be paid more whilst retired than while they worked (if they live 33.3 years after they retire - 50+33.3 = 83.3 - Not inconceivable).
Can taxpayers really afford this when they can't afford to retire until 60+ themselves, if ever?

Why? Would you actually bother to look into it?

The fraud investigation began 18 months ago after a series of Globe reports revealed that dozens of firefighters filed potentially fraudulent disability claims - often receiving higher pay because they said their injuries occurred while they were filling in for superiors.
Firefighters love to claim a disability because then 50-100% of their retirement income remains tax free. It's a nationwide problem. The firefighters go apeshit when people talk about see ( see link in OP [ which I'm sure you didn't read last night.

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massac … ion_abuse/

or here;

Highlights from a new report on disability retirements in the California
Highway Patrol:
* "Chief's disease" - the tendency of CHP top brass to take disability
retirements at career's end - is real. Assistant chiefs, for example, take
disability retirements at a rate 33% higher than rank-and-file officers.
* An analysis of all CHP disability retirements since 2000 found 15 cases
that may warrant criminal prosecution.
* Another 20 questionable cases have been referred to the state retirement
system for investigation. * The percentage of CHP officers taking disability
retirements increased from 47 percent in 1996 to a high of 82 percent in
2002.
* The number of disability retirements spiked in the late 1990s when the
patrol's fraud investigation team was disbanded.

* CHP workers' compensation costs last year totaled $67 million, nearly
one-tenth of the patrol's total payroll and up 86 percent since 1995-96.

Are their some hard working dedicated officers?  sure.

But the fact is the majority are goons on the take.
Police serve no purpose other than to collect funds to protect the pensions of the swine that enable them.

Well that's why ticket prices are crazy out of whack and our punishments don't fit the crime anymore.

That's like, a fucking crisis. 70% of California Highway Patrol officers receive debilitating injuries??? How can we live?

Should a citizen dare speak out?

The response from public safety workers and their supporters inundated the winery’s Facebook page this weekend as word of the letter spread on social networking sites.

“I only hope that when your winery is burning down, no fire fighters come to help your business,” stated one post, submitted under the name of Emily Morena Orloff. “I hope your business rots in hell in this economy.”

Public safety working are pigs at the slop trough. The tit is public wealth and their bellies are full.

These people deserve nothing but scorn, because they are no more than thieves that have joined in the plunder.

You may have systemic corruption in the CHP.
This does not mean it is the same throughout the country.

In many ways, you are absolutely correct.
But by painting with an overly wide brush, you dilute your results.

ATG wrote:

And you conspiracy theorists, making sweeping generalizations, demonizing people who do not adhere to your complete vision - you make it easier for the real crooks to dismiss real evidence of real corruption and conspiracy, as the feverish imagination of yet another tinfoil hatter turning a specific item into a global conspiracy.

Riiiight. This is why conspiracy ppl make me smile. First they're all "wake up, can't you see what's going on yada yada yada". And when you ask for a clarification what they mean, they claim that you wouldn't understand it anyway. This leads to the option that you have no clue what you are raving about yourself.
