The number of drug deaths in the US in a typical year is as follows:

Tobacco kills about 390,000.
Alcohol kills about 80,000.
Sidestream smoke from tobacco kills about 50,000.
Cocaine kills about 2,200.
Heroin kills about 2,000.
Aspirin kills about 2,000.
Marijuana kills 0. There has never been a recorded death due to marijuana at any time in US history.
All illegal drugs combined kill about 4,500 people per year, or about one percent of the number killed by alcohol and tobacco. Tobacco kills more people each year than all of the people killed by all of the illegal drugs in the last century.

Which drug causes the greatest burden on our medical facilities?
Alcohol and tobacco are the clear leaders. Some authorities have estimated that up to forty percent of all hospital care in the United States is for conditions related to alcohol.

As a medical hazard, few drugs can compete with alcohol or tobacco on any scale. A study at Rockefeller University in 1967 concluded that "Tobacco is unquestionably more hazardous to the health than heroin."

What does it cost to put a single drug dealer in jail?
The cost to put a single drug dealer in jail is about $450,000, composed of the following:

The cost for arrest and conviction is about $150,000.

The cost for an additional prison bed is about $50,000 to $150,000, depending upon the jurisdiction.

It costs about $30,000 per year to house a prisoner. With an average sentence of 5 years, that adds up to another $150,000.

The same $450,000 can provide treatment or education for about 200 people. In addition, putting a person in prison produces about fifteen dollars in related welfare costs, for every dollar spent on incarceration. Every dollar spent on treatment and education saves about five dollars in related welfare costs.

i stopped about three years ago after 15 yrs of day in day out and it was the hardest thing i ever did because i never smoked ciggies so i had cravings for them both! the only thing i felt was that it kept me on the couch alot more than perhaps it should!that said i have friends that just smoke socially or of an evening but for me it was 24/7,damn that addictive personality!! i gave up when i developed diabetes and do feel better for it but i do still think about it and crave it specially when playing BF2,think it would've complemented it perfectly!! mmmmm ganja...dont get me started! lol +1 for the thread!

Marijuana should be legalised. It'd be better for EVERYONE.

1.No more spending all this money and time on smuggling/stopping it from comping through the borders.

2.They could actually start busting down on the drugs THAT KILL PEOPLE:Heroin, cocaine, meth, shrooms, etc, etc, etc.....

3.We could set up a trade with countries that grow a lot of it(I.E. MANY SOUTH AMERICAN COUNTRIES THAT ARE POOR)

4.It'd be cheaper for me to buy because it wasn't as hard to get

Also marijuana has never killed anyone, you can't overdose (The worse thing that'd happed is "Man, i'm so blazed right now!" then you pass out lol). The smoke from ciggarettes is worse for you then the smoke from pot. Alcohol affects your senses WAY more then pot. But for some reason both ciggarettes and Alcohol are legal.....

Anyways I could go on more and more but I don't really feel like ranting right now. I also believe that here (Denver, Colorado) is gonna be the first place in the US it'll become legal. There are a TON of stoners here and it's legal on 4/20(Dunno if thats the same anywhere else, please tell me if it is) and You are allowed to have a small amount on you at any time if you are over the age of 18(I think the "small amount" is under 1 ounce...) So those are my reasons why I think it'll be legal here first XD. Then I think somewhere like Seattle or Phoenix will do it, then hopefully the whole USA will be able to light up a joint and sit back together

Brain Damage

Marijuana is psychoactive because it stimulates certain brain receptors, but it does not produce toxins that kill them (like alcohol), and it does not wear them out as other drugs may. There is no evidence that marijuana use is a cause of brain damage. Studies by Dr. Robert Heath claimed the contrary in experiments on monkeys, but Heath's work has been sharply criticized by the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences on three primary counts:

its insufficient sample size (only four monkeys),
its failure to control experimental bias, and its misidentification of normal monkey brain structure as "damaged".
This particular experiment by Dr. Heath was performed by administering the weed smoke through gas masks causing the monkeys to lack the amount of oxygen needed to go to the brain. Thus causing brain cells to die in the process. One of them actually died from afixiation.

Egg in a skillett my BALLS.....

Sooner the sheep can get the propaganda out of thier skulls the easier it will be to get it legalized.

Just in America today it isn't debatable on capitol hill. Too much to lose for the US government.

wow, dank, that's a friggin book.  did you do a research paper or something?  not common to see cited sources in a forum post.

Totally doesn't make sense that something with non-lethal qualities is dealt with more seriously than things that kill thousands upon thousands each year.

The thing the FDA worries about is control.  Sure, they could legalize/decriminalize weed and make a killing off the excise tax, rather than spend out the ass to fight it.  "But what's to stop somebody from growing the shit in his back yard?" is the "problem" they seem to have identified.  I know, it doesn't make sense to me, either.  Ya don't see people sneaking tobacco plants around...

As far as I see it.  The best smoke in the world does not come from the US.  Which is why it is illegal.

If it did come from the US, I am sure it would be legal.  The gov would make a ton of money on the tax.  However hell and high water we are going to pay Mexico for weed.

I don't smoke it but I believe it should be legal. It will never happen though because the government will have to admit they were wrong and that just never happens in the U.S.A. Everyone is always right even when they are blantantly wrong!
