Why work in sales? Why work in any commission based job? Because the likelihood is that you will end up making more money than if you had a fixed salary. I'm having a bad day if I'm not pulling in $25 an hour in tips alone. Will any restaurant in the world pay me $25 an hour to wait tables? Doubtful.
I'm not one to know the exact wages of waiters, but $25 an hour doesn't seem at all excessive for certain times/restaurants.
Then look at it this way. Why should two people be paid the same regardless of the effort they put in? In this system hard work and effort is rewarded, as well as having the people skills required of someone in the job. The best servers make the best wages and the poor ones make poor wages. Why should they be evened out by a fixed salary?

I've seen a waitress chase a customer into the parking lot saying 'you forgot your change' after they left her a $2 tip on a $100 meal. Not getting a tip is such an exceptional occurrence here that this would happen. I've seen waitresses break down and cry after busting their ass to serve a table well and then not receive a penny.

Any restaurant in the world? You'd pull $20/hour as the absolute minimum in Denmark.

That's what discretionary tipping is for.

True, but isn't the cost of living much higher there than in most of the U.S.?...

I'm talking a shitty local chain restaurant that I used to work in where the prices were pretty dirt cheap. You had to work way harder for the $25 an hour than you would've in a fine dining restaurant where the average diner spends $100 per plate.

It's really no different here. 15% is the base and you go higher for exceptional service. The only difference is that instead of paying the wage of your server indirectly, you do it directly.

That $20/hour absolute minimum is what you get working in those shitty places in Denmark.

So why have an obligatory tip in the first place?

A cookie? You asked if any restaurant would pay you $25/hour to wait tables. I gave you an affirmative answer. A little maturity wouldn't kill you.

Why do Finns spend hours in saunas and then jump in a half frozen lake?

Why even waste people's time arguing the merits of a system if you're just going to fall back on "it... is... our... culture..." when you run your argument into the ground?

I haven't run it into the ground in the slightest. You want the shitty servers/waiters carried on a salary and we want our shitty servers/waiters to quit the job because they aren't making enough tips to support themselves.

We fire the shitty waiters or the business go broke due to no repeat customers.

this faggot ass bartender in ayia napa made me quite a few cocktails and out of the goodness of my heart i was thinking about maybe giving him a tip when i ordered my last drink (not that he deserves it, hes doing his job like everyone else, he gets a wage, why do bars deserve tips?) before we left that bar.  as i was paying for my next to last drink and he was returning my change to me he said "i think i deserve this no?" and began to place it in his tip box! wtf! CUNT. you dont ask for tips you stupid blonde prick, i let him have it anyway seen as i was in a good mood, hes very lucky, any other day and theres a chance he could of got knocked the fuck out. prick

I'm just failing to understand why this infuriates your sensibilities so much. Adding 15% gratuity to a restaurant bill is like breathing.

Because I like to pay the advertised price. Also it doesn't 'infuriate' me, just seems retarded (cause it is).

I just know to mentally add 25% to any meal I buy.

True, most countries are more honest about final prices than here.

To be honest, the answer to this is that most restaurant owners are cheap mother@#$%ers.
