No, there's nothing wrong with it. Everyone is happy with the current system except for cheap douchebags like mikkel. It is a cultural thing. Instead of going through the restaurant directly, the customer pays the wages of the waiter/waitress directly. It ensures better service that way. People who work on commission generally work a lot harder than people on a fixed salary.

Its not about being cheap, its about not wanting to have people bowing and scraping to get a dollar out of me.

Well, I wouldn't necessarily say that.  The "canadians" in our system make it a problematic situation, also because of their culture (or lack thereof).

It would be more practical in the long run to adopt Spain's policy of giving waitstaff a living wage while reserving tips for exceptional service.

Not just Spain, pretty much everywhere outside of America, yet again.

wtf is this about Canadians?  I've always tipped 15% as a minimum and so has pretty much everyone I know.  We could probably say the same about you ignorant, greedy americans

Canadians are foreigners, foreigners don't tip, black people don't tip. black people = canadians.

Well id probably tip if I did visit America. I don't horde my vast wealth like I must be making out here, I live day to day.

I'm sure an american customer here would be most welcome. A solid minimum wage plus a 20% tip would be nice.

Why work in sales? Why work in any commission based job? Because the likelihood is that you will end up making more money than if you had a fixed salary. I'm having a bad day if I'm not pulling in $25 an hour in tips alone. Will any restaurant in the world pay me $25 an hour to wait tables? Doubtful.

I'm not one to know the exact wages of waiters, but $25 an hour doesn't seem at all excessive for certain times/restaurants.
