Then set the Global control for "Auto Background" to off.

As far as battery life. I can agree, and what makes it worse is that it doesn't work for what it's supposed to. Because they claim that it keeps the wifi connected so apps can use it while the iPod's sleeping.... But if I'm downloading app updates, they fail when my iPod goes to sleep because of connection issues. Dafuck.
