ye-ep that's an accurate summary of the sort of gamer blizzard are aiming for now...

weekend warriors: they pay the same subscription fee every month, and don't demand such high-quality or demanding game-play. easily satisfied, the biggest slice of the consumer-market, and will likely carry on playing it because they're not interested in any other games. win/win for blizzard. it's unsurprising that warcraft has declined, really, there's so little incentive to carry on making hardcore content for such a small, and growing increasingly ever smaller, minority.

As I recall, WoW was the vehicle for one of the very few All Other Games Spamthread Festivals. I suppose most people have been afraid of making one since, if they weren't already wary of getting slammed.

Me, all I need to see is this OP's screenshots to be reminded of how War3 was bastardized into an MMO and abandoned as a contiguous series (until War4, in like 2022).

tbh making war 3 into an MMO was the best thing blizz ever did for themselves as a company...

i stopped playing when it became a casual-friendly affair
It was always a casual-friendly affair. Even blizzard acknowledged that. They took the good parts of an RPG, simplified it and made it accessible. It was never hardcore.

the game had hardcore elements... without a question. it wasn't as grind-intensive as korean MMO treadmills and it didn't have superfluous and unnecessary complication in 'bonus' areas, but the core gameplay had a hardcore top-end. you are contending that it isn't 'hardcore' because you play EVE online, which is the MMO equivalent of a spreadsheet with pretty universe-painted backgrounds. WoW is the complete opposite end of the MMO-design spectrum from that, but it doesn't mean it 'isn't' hardcore. they are fairly incomparable games, despite their similar genre. WoW's hardcore lies in realtime combat, realtime cooperative decisions and dynamic gameplay. EVE's hardcore lies in careful preparation, intelligent ship set-ups and the macro-scale combat. both have, or at least had, refined aspects of gameplay.

So +1, you're 25% of the way there

OT, never played WoW, but as game it must be doing something right - it's like multimedia heroin for millions. I just never liked the orcs/elves/spells kinda games.

i dont 'get' eve as in i dont 'get' how the way the game IS designed can be found 'fun'.

i didn't fail to 'get' eve as in grasp the basic concept and go HURR DURR I QUIT. i just found the way the game's combat, gameplay and general action was done was boring and unengaging. in world of warcraft you have to decide every second what move to do next, where to move/position yourself, whilst reading the other opponent(s) move(s) in real-time. in EVE it seems like half of the battle is decided on pure numbers or maths before the fight even begins and you just sit there and /afk-orbit/range whilst others tackle and you pwn ass. that's boring to me. i prefer, for example, the dynamic competitive challenge of arena matches.

In that aspect is has gotten easier a little bit, but that is only from a veteran's point of view, because you already have the skill finely tuned. Where as someone who is new to the game still has to learn the intricacies of end game, so it is still quite hard for them, even if it isn't as hard as it was back in vanilla.

I agree. But it also turned War 4 into Duke Nukem Forever.

So I heard you like mudkipz that it's $13 a month now? Jesus fuck that's highway robbery. Blizzard's got a good gig going with millions of people paying that kind of money.

im not aware blizzard have ever changed the price

EVE is more expensive than WoW and always has been

WoW is pretty much the average-consumer MMORPG, in terms of subscription price . . .

also if you think $15 is highway robbery then i guess you're putting your daily meals on layaway...

The price isn't out of nowhere. It pays for the constant monitoring of balance and a bug-free environment. Plus the amazing GM support that is very rare in any other game. The fact that blizzard cares about their game and have the best interest of the players in mind.

im not sure the price is fully justified, cent-for-cent, in terms of return in in-game experience... but it funds other awesome blizz games

also, to refer to the old bf2s-stat of $-return-per-hour... your average WoW player is getting way more than fifteen buck's worth of play/month.

some people will pay $50 for an fps game and not play it for as many hours in a YEAR as a WoW player will spend in a month
