You've cooked the coil?
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

The tweeter in one of the speakers has blown. And then you get all the other problems of 25-27 year old speakers..

Well, 2 and a half months later.. it's finished!

(Don't mind the horrendous carpet... it will go when we do up the room later this year!)

So to recap, I ended up with:
- Cambridge Audio 650A amplifier
- CA 650C cd player
- CA 640P phono pre-amp
- Xavian Gran Colonna speakers (they are designed in Italy, hand built in Prague and sound fucking beautiful )

As for the cables, this evening I went around to my uncle's to pick them up. He gave me some of his spare Highwire Audio cables - handing me a 1m interconnect (for the CD player to amp), he said offhand "that retails for about $500... happy birthday!" The speaker cables are something similar, although I initially had some problem getting them on. The "spade" ends are too wide for the amp (yeah weird lol), but he said it would work if I just put one of the prongs in contact with the amp's terminals. And it does.

I've just christened the setup with this aptly named track by Darren Rahn his sax is musical earsex.

Sell that expensive cable and buy beer instead.

Wow, that carpet truly is hideous! Great setup though, glad you're happy with it. What did it all come to, in the end?

very nice. i'd look into getting a valve-driven amp + top-end headphones for true audiophile moments, though.

you know... quiet time in an armchair with a vinyl-record and the sleeve-notes

Lol, it so is.. can't wait to get rid of it. Ummm.. it came to about A$3,250. We got around 15% off retail price on the Cambridge stuff and speakers, while the cables were free... so it's worth a bit more than we spent

Haha, I'm out of money at the moment.. but I may do that later down the road.

It's not in the shot (just a bit right of frame), but an equally hideous looking armchair is parked in front of the stereo. I'll get a nicer one when we fix up the room (I want some sort of leg rest!), but tonight it served its purpose well. I had a bit of wine (lol) while listening to a few jazz vinyls. Was fucking classy
