no, it's not... because the inconvenient truth of that matter is that US bombing did lead to millions of deaths.

incidentally, and conveniently for american historians and western conceptions of '20th century history', pol pot was doing the same thing at the same time. doesn't all of a sudden pardon nixon for authorizing and planning such a fucking awful campaign, nor does it make the illegal action (by UN definitions) a legal act; the bad deed being the 'lesser of two evils' being suffered by a people at that time doesn't stop it being an inherently bad fucking deed to start with.

if i wanted to shake-hands with nixon or pol-pot, i'd go with nixon. sure the guy's great compared to a dictator. compared to your average, honest man? nixon is a crook.

I'm no fan of Nixon. We agree that he was an evil motherfucker.

At the same time, however, it would seem that the circumstances literally made it so that the Cambodians were dead either way.

When millions will die regardless of the choices made, then those deaths are merely collateral. Morals stop being the concern, and cold, ruthless logic becomes the only relevant mode of thought.

Besides, what's most moral is often a subjective matter, whereas what is most practical can be more reliably quantified.

i don't think there is any exaggeration or bullshit in saying nixon took a politician's 'liberties' (i.e. the underhand, amoral conduct turq mentioned) to the "absolute extreme". the guy spied on his own government, pardoned loads of crooked and corrupt officials and gangsters, funded tons of illegal military campaigns and ordered the deaths of innocent civilians. he disrespected the basic tenets of american constitutional liberty and turned your whole country in a pretty ugly direction, to be honest. definitely one of the most dangerous presidents to ever have access to the war-room + red button. absolute nutjob, total paranoid-inferior complex, and total fucking bastard-crook.
